Quote:60th anniversary Godzilla Music Festival” will feature film screening and live music
Krista Rogers yesterday

It’s hard to believe that Godzilla is celebrating his 60th birthday this week. The original black-and-white film was released on November 3, 1954, and has since then spawned a whole franchise of subsequent movies and become a recognizable pop culture icon across the world.

To commemorate everybody’s favorite havoc-wreaking monster, a full screening of the original 1954 film accompanied by a live orchestral performance of the musical score will be held on Sunday, January 18 next year at Tokyo’s NHK Hall. What better way to ring in the new year than with a blast from cinematic history past?

The program for the 60th anniversary Godzilla Music Festival (生誕60周年記念 ゴジラ音楽祭) will be split into two parts. The first part will feature a live performance of “Symphonic Fantasia No. 1″ (SF交響ファンタジー第1番; otherwise known as the main Godzilla theme), which was composed by the prolific Akira Ifukube. The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform this piece, led by composer/conductor Kaoru Wada, who happens to be an apprentice of the late Ifukube. There will also be a “talk show” segment featuring Akira Takarada, an actor who starred in the original 1954 and several subsequent Godzilla films, along with Shiro Sano, who starred in some of the more recent films. The second part of the program will consist of a full screening of the original 1954 Godzilla film accompanied once again by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and female chorus Chor June. In addition, all event-goers will receive a special commemorative film bookmark upon entry.

According to event sponsor Toho Music, a similar Godzilla screening event to honor Ifukube held this past July at the Tokyo Opera City Tower was sold out, so you should order your tickets as soon as possible. Seats are priced according to three different groups, at 6,500 yen (US$57.23), 7,500 yen ($66.06), or 8,500 yen ($74.83) per seat. Promax Inc. supplies links on its website to three different vendors in Japan where you can buy your tickets (Japanese only, sorry).

Doors at the NHK Hall will open at 4:15pm and the program will begin at 5pm on January 18. This will be an event that both longtime Godzilla fans and newcomers alike can appreciate, so dig out your nostalgic, rubber reptilian suit and get pumped!

Quote:New, Japanese-made Godzilla movie to start filming next summer

Casey Baseel about an hour ago

Terrible as it was, there was one good thing that came out of the 1998 American Godzilla movie. It was apparently so bad that franchise creator Toho Co. couldn’t bear to let it be the final on-screen appearance for the King of the Monsters, so the company made six more of its own Godzilla movies, culminating with 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.

Now, after a 10-year break, Toho is going back to its deepest kaiju well, announcing that a new, Japanese-produced Godzilla film will start filming next year.

This time, though, the reason for waking up Godzilla isn’t the embarrassing disappointment of an American-made offshoot. Just the opposite, as the impetus is the impressive box office performance of Legendary Picture’s 2014 Godzilla. Legendary’s reboot has earned some US$525 million worldwide, including 32 billion yen ($267 million) at theatres in Godzilla’s birthplace of Japan.

Filming is expected to start next summer and finish sometime in the fall, with the domestic theatrical release scheduled for 2016. The new Japanese film has no story connection to the 2014 version, so Legendary’s MUTOs won’t be making any appearances.

▼ The lower-calorie Japanese diet, though, means moviegoers probably stand a better chance of seeing Godzilla’s neck this time around.

Toho is yet to announce the new movie’s cast and ostensible villain monster, not has the company made any comment about whether or not the upcoming film is a standalone project or the jumping-off point for a new series of Japanese-made Godzilla movies. But while Godzilla, the character, is birthed by radiation, Godzilla movies come from ticket and merchandise sales, so provided that the big guy does as well at the box office in 2016 as he did in 2014, we might be seeing a lot of him over the next decade.

Quote:Reebok releases limited edition Instapump Fury Road sneakers to celebrate upcoming Godzilla movie
[Image: godzilla-top.jpg?w=580&h=508]
Step out in a pair of Godzilla kicks featuring a number of awesomebeastly details.

If Godzilla ever needed a new pair of shoes, these sneakers would be up to the task. A joint collaboration between Reebok and the MegaHouse brand that belongs to video game publishing giant Bandai Namco, the new sneakers come in two designs: Reebok CLASSIC × MegaHouse Instapump Fury Road Ver.GODZILLA and the Reebok CLASSIC × MegaHouse Instapump Fury Road Ver.ShinGodzilla.
Both use the distinctive Reebok Instapump Fury silhouette, and the Godzilla version features a textured black material which resembles the skin of the giant monster.
▼ The design that runs along the side of the shoe is another homage to the beast.
▼ And just to let everyone know whose shoes you’re wearing, the heel is emblazoned with the title “King of the Monsters”.
The soles feature a spectacular red-and-black clawed footprint design, along with the words “Godzilla Vs. Fury Road” in Japanese.
While the Godzilla sneakers celebrate the awesome stylings of the original beast, the “Shin Godzilla” design acts as a nod to its latest incarnation, set to wreak havoc on Tokyo in the upcoming Shin Godzilla movie, which will be out in Japanese theatres on July 29 and marketed internationally under the title, Godzilla Resurgence.
These kicks incorporate phosphorescent material into the design, to create an otherworldly glow after dark.
The grey, black and green colours of the shoe are complimented with red accents, including a bloody, three-clawed gash on the heel.
These soles feature a slightly different Godzilla footprint design, again using the words, “Godzilla Vs. Fury Road” in Japanese.

Both styles retail for 28,000 yen (US$263.89) each, plus tax, with the Premium Bandaiwebsite in Japan accepting pre-orders from July 29, to coincide with the release of the new Godzilla film. For a full list of retailers in Japan that will be stocking the shoes from the official on-sale date in January 2017, check out the MegaHouse website for more details.

Quote:Net users half-amused, half-irked by images of Godzilla selling various Japanese products
[Image: zilla11.png?w=580&h=484]
Tacky? Yes. But even the King of Monsters needs to scrape a living by endorsing some products!

Last month’s premiere of Shin Gojira (known as Godzilla Resurgence overseas) has breathed life into the decades-old film franchise, as the King of Monsters terrorizes his way back to the domestic film market for the first time in over a decade. Movie goers should note that while the star of this new film is a CG-generated creation, its overall design pays tribute to an older generation of Godzilla models.
That said, it costs a lot to reboot a franchise, especially when working with one of the most legendary cinematic characters of all time. One way to deal with the high costs of production (and the destruction left in Godzilla’s wake!) is to team up with various brands for marketing collaborations, as Twitter user @sto_mkv recently demonstrated by posting a series of promotional images connecting Shin Gojira to various companies and products.
Here are Godzilla’s latest commercial tie-ins, with a few bonus ones thrown in:

While several net users voiced their exasperation at seeing the King of Monsters in such ludicrous get-ups, others were tickled by his marketing antics, going so far as to call the collages “cute.” While we don’t think Godzilla would stand for such trivialities normally, we can’t help but find something endearing about a karaoke-singing monster…

Quote:Shin Godzilla Listed in U.S. Theaters on October 11-18
posted on 2016-08-31 01:50 EDT

U.S poster also unveiled for film that sold 3.6 million tickets in Japan

Ticketing service Fandango revealed the poster for Funimation's North American release of the Shin Godzillamovie on Tuesday. The poster reveals an October 11-18 screening run for the film. Theaters have also beenlisting the same release dates for the film.

The film will have IMAX, MX4D, and 4DX screenings.
The film has earned 5.3 billion yen (about US$51.63 million) and has sold 3.6 million tickets. It has surpassed the earnings of director Hideaki Anno's previous film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
The film opened on 441 screens in its opening weekend on July 29, having sold 412,302 tickets for 624,610,700 yen (about US$6.08 million). The film topped the Japanese box office for two straight weeks, but fell to #2 in its third week, and #3 in its fifth week.
TOHO's live-action Godzilla franchise of 29 films has sold over 100 million tickets in Japan, a first for a Japanese live-action film franchise. TOHO released the first film in the franchise in 1954, and that film sold 9.61 million tickets. The third film in the franchise, the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla, sold 12.55 million tickets, the highest in the series. Shin Godzilla represents the latest in TOHO's film series after a 12-year absence since 2004'sGodzilla: Final Wars.

The giant Godzilla head towers 52m (171ft) above the streets at an entertainment complex that includes an Imax cinema owned by Toho, the Japanese studio behind the 1954 original Godzilla film. The company made its last Godzilla film in 2004.
Toho is due to release another Godzilla film after a decade-long hiatus, inspired by the success of 2014's Warner brothers revival. Toho's reboot is set for release next year, ahead of the Hollywood sequel, planned for 2018.
