Got totally sucked into this tonight - all the way to e8.
The ecchi factor has toned down and I’m grateful of that because it gets borderline hentai which just isn’t my thing. Several eps come with the warning of nudity but that’s been false. There’s still a lot of issues with Okarun’s genitals being stolen by Turbo Granny, and Okarun bites her boob as a counterattack. But no more stripping Momo to her undies and less upskirt shots.
I love how the Yokai are depicted. The color schemes get saturated and they all have way too many teeth, crash eyes, wild hair and lined faces. This gets almost kaiju with a demon crab. Turbo Granny possessing a maneki-neko leveled up the anime hilarity. The demon Yokai are given back stories that explain why they’re essentially hungry ghosts, so even tho they’re monsters, it’s explained thru past trauma. They are the result of extreme tragedy, which should be at the core of any haunting.
Then e8 dropped a bomb of a back story, in part to introduce a new character, a vain hawty that stumbles across Okarun’s lost golden testicle or kintama. It grants her powers to see a new Yokai called acrobatic silky (that’s gotta be a bad translation). Their back story is heart wrenching and takes the bulk of e8 - some powerful storytelling just when I was about to write this off as just another wacky anime. Got all kinds of feels from this.
2 more eps and that’s it for s1.
