Once Upon a Time in China (1993)
#2
Wow 13 years ago and cf was spot on with his review. I just rewatched this for a percolating Den piece and it did not live up to my memory of it. The fight scenes were magnificent - the ladder fight that cr mentions is fantasy-tastic. The umbrella fight is brilliant. Some of Jet’s combos are just unreal. He could move with such effortless speed and flexibility - simply awe inspiring.

It’s that quirky humor that falls apart. The fat jokes aimed at Kent Cheng, the clownish humor with Buck tooth So’s lisp (Jacky Cheung in an almost unrecognizable role), the peeking at Rosalind Kwan as she baths (foreshadowing of her rape attempt) - the comic relief just doesn’t fit.

It’s so much about the fights. Jet’s duels with Yen Shih Kuan - a perpetual villain - are dazzling.

D00M recommended although if memory serves, OUaTiC2 is a better film. But then again, memory painted this film much better. Perhaps it just has not aged well. Still enjoyable nevertheless.
