I'd never heard of this one; I found it in the Little Free Library down the street. This was a UK edition; it was published in the US as Sherlock Holmes - the Missing Years. The author is from Tibet (now living in the US according to Wikipedia).
It takes place just after Holmes' supposed death at Reichenbach Falls. He travels incognito to India, having learned that Moriarty's enormous crime syndicate extends there. He meets an Indian agent for the British government (based on a character in Rudyard Kipling's Kim) who starts working with him. After a couple of attempts on his life, Holmes decides to go into hiding and travels into Tibet. Most of the book takes place there. It brings in some of those stories of lamas with mysterious powers, and touches a bit on Buddhist lore.
Highly recommended for Holmes fans. The author mimics a Victorian style quite well, and has the Indian agent tell the story; he frames the whole thing within a "found manuscript" opening and closing. The action moves right along. There's an interesting twist to the story. Quite enjoyable.
