Director by Night
This is the behind scenes movie for Werewolf by Night directed by Michael's brother Anthony. But sort of. It's more of an exploration of Michael's childhood and how he was a director back then. Michael was inveterate videographer. He filmed lots of events. But he also, like some of us, gathered all his buddies around and made short films. Making Werewolf by Night was just an extension of those early films with his buddies with a much bigger budget. The whole film is more of a personal essay than your typical BTS movie. And Anthony injects himself into a lot of it. You get to see Anthony with his (and Michael's) mother and father. One scene that goes on forever of them making meatballs while they talk about Michael's movies. You know Anthony wants to be in this movie when you see the two camera set-up of Anthony driving. There is a mounted camera in the passenger seat and there is a cameraman with camera in the back seat. Why do you need to do this when the subject of the doc isn't even in the camera.
It all comes full circle when Michael loads up a Super8 camera with fresh film and films his sets of the movie. These images are then used in the documentary. The film ends by going back to Micheal's home town and they meet up with Michael's friends, stars of the early films. They reminisce about the film making and go back to where those films were shot.
The film was interesting to look at how Michael got to where he is but there is too much of it. And there wasn't nearly enough about the actual making of Werewolf by Night.
