Warriors of Virtue (1997)
#1
From a 2006 post about when i interviewed Director Ronny Yu:

(06-21-2006, 06:46 PM)Drunk Monk Wrote: Ronny directed Fearless, Jet Li's new movie.  He also directed one of my favorite fantasy films, The Bride with White Hair, as well as a wonderful kid's film, Warriors of Virtue, which totally kicked ass on those mutant turtles (I think they were really pirates anyway).  He also did some films I'm sure that BeePee saw - Bride of Chucky and Jason vs. Freddy.  He was slated for Snakes on a Plane, but he left the project for some undisclosed reason, which I was going to ask him about but we had too much fun talking about other things and I ran out of time.

And strangely, Brokeback Mountain did come up in this interview...

Here's that interview: http://www.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/arti...rticle=682 It remains one of my favorite interviews so far.

Warriors of Virtue is about Wushu Kangaroos. It's from the age of pre-CGI fantasy films where magnificently gaudy sets had to be built and the Roos are animatronic masks. It was a major flop in its day but I'm surprised how well it held up for me. Don't get me wrong. It's a severely flawed film sorely in need of editing (the hour forty five could easily be whittled down by a half hour for a much tighter story). There's a lot of suspension of believe in how the protag gets to the magical world of Tao and then back home again, but if you're going to accept wushuroos, you just got to accept that.

The protag kid isn't very good and fails to carry the part. He retired from acting soon after this film - he did one more TV movie and that was it. IMDb says he works for the electoral alliance SF Rising now.

The wushuroos are still awesome. The masks are convincingly sophisticated and the wushu is modified to use their tales well. The fights are solid considering how unwieldy those roo costumes are. That's still what impresses me about this.

The villain quotes The Warriors at one random point 'Warriors. Come out to play-yay...' That's incongruous.

I rewatched this because I'm putting together a piece on Kid-friendly martial arts films. This almost works. There's a critical line 'Shit happens' which might DQ it. I'm debating over that.

Sword fights! Crazy flying fantasy sword fights too...with Roos! Not DOOM recommended, unless you fast forward to the fight scenes.
