So now that we're down to one car, I need to hitch rides to get places when Stacy is working, which is basically whenever I'm not working. If I had a car, I might've worked the Stones last night, but instead, it was SVCC (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...9#pid34039) and that was fun - no FOMO there except for the odd stalking of a former girlfriend - my date for my senior prom no less. She asked after me at Rock Med at Pitbull and at the Stones, which is remarkable because I'm amazed she even remembers me.
But anyway, Stacy dropped me off early to SVCC on her way to a day of private clients. I wound up chatting with some guy who said he worked for Netflix until they let us VIPs & press in (we get early access). Did SVCC (actually did it all Friday) and left before it ended to catch the train to Palo where I had like 4 hours to kill so I popped into the Aquarius to check this film out. I knew nothing about it.
Man, what a gear shift from SVCC. Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth and newcomer Kelvin Harrison Jr. (now on my one-to-watch list) take out a suburban drama about a black star student (Kelvin) adopted by white parents (Naomi & Tim) who gets flagged because of a disturbing paper he wrote for his high school teacher (Octavia). It's based on some play, so there's some great zinger lines, like one about Obama that is spot on. It addresses racial issues, immigration, parenting, mental illness, terrorism, red flagging - a small indie film where the whole cast delivers. I was very engaged.
Not sure I'd recommend it for DOOM. No sword fights, not really our genre. But very thought provoking if you're into tight writing and strong acting, plus a good way to kill an hour and a half.
