GILROY, Calif. —
The popular Gilroy Garlic Festival and gourmet alley, which attracted tens of thousands of garlic lovers and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities, is being canceled indefinitely.
“Due to lingering uncertainties from the pandemic, along with prohibitive insurance requirements by the City of Gilroy, the Gilroy Garlic Festival Board has decided not to move ahead with a festival for 2022 and the foreseeable future,” the festival board of directors said in a letter to local media.

According to past president and current board member, Tom Cline the festival was losing money.
“Clearly it was over the 10 years of just losing money was the main culprit and the main cause of what was going on with the festival and being able to be sustainable and that was the real cause that was the root cause of it,” Cline said.
Festival organizers said rising costs and insurance premiums contributed to the problem. The festival was having to bus-in people as development encroached around Christmas Hill Park where the annual was held.
“The truth of the matter is the development around Christmas Hill Park is what was eating at the Garlic Festival Association's reserves and they were barely able to keep that going,” said Gilroy Mayor Marie Blankley.
Organizers said a deadly shooting at the festival in 2019 that left three dead and injured 17, played little in their decision to cancel the festival. The event never really recovered from it. The festival was canceled the following year because of COVID-19 and a drive-thru version was held in 2021.
“The nonprofits, schools, sports teams, I mean so many things yes that depended on it for fundraising absolutely that's probably the biggest loss I would say,” Blankley said.
Organizers say they are re-imagining the annual festival and will look to bring back a much smaller version, possibly a 2,500 to 5,000 person a day event; if they can only find a venue.
“We're not going away," Cline said. "We're trying to work through it and figure it out and it is a process and it's hard to put a timetable on it and I know people want that and understand that we just got to find it."
Festival organizers said they plan to hold several smaller events this summer to keep the brand alive and raise money for local nonprofits. Those events include a golf tournament in June, a concert in July and a dinner in September.

I only remember going once. It was a fun date with an old gf, but we got caught in traffic on the way out and I was late for work. That was the MQ6 days and one of the only times in my life I was ever late for work. I kinda remember it not quite living up to its reputation. That must've been the early 80s...

Howard Johnson’s was once the largest restaurant chain in America. Now, they’re all gone. In the ’60s and ’70s, there were about 1,000 locations of the restaurant that served up a range of American food and had 28 types of ice cream.
You probably recognized the restaurant by its iconic orange roof. By 1985, the restaurant chain was suffering due to the popularity of other fast food joints like McDonald’s and was bought out by Marriott. Many of the restaurants were sold and changed names. Still, a few Howard Johnson’s remained, until now.

The final location was in Lake George, New York. It was open for most of the past 70 years and was a popular spot for vacationers in that area. The location recently closed and is now up for lease.

A fan wrote on Facebook, “Lake George is officially dead. Plastic tables and Chairs removed. All memorabilia removed (at least the stuff that is not original, that stays with building. So basically the tables and the ice cream signs) Cobwebs on the door. Right before Memorial Day rush up here. I know that this place has been inconsistent open over the last few years but this is the first time they’ve been closed for a major busy weekend in lake George. So I think this is it.”  They also shared several photos of the abandoned restaurant.

Didn't realize this was gone. Not sure when the last time I went to one was... was there one on Steven's Creek? Did they have fried zucchini? That's all I got for HoJo memories...

I spent many hours at Cafe Perg when I was here in 87-9. It was close to where I lived. It's right across the street from the Well, so when Stacy started working there after we moved here a decade ago, I spent some time there again, mostly for nostalgia's sake. It was a funky college cafe, with mediocre offerings at best, but a lot of character.

It's been empty for so long...I saw Ninja Academy play an afternoon show there to about 15 people. Noise Clinic opened. After the show, the drummer was trying to find the person in charge to get paid, only to find it was a non-paying gig. At least they sold a couple of T-shirts.

Cedar Fair, a company that owns amusement parks such as Knott's Berry Farm & Cedar Point, has announced that the land for California's Great America has been sold.

Prologis, a Bay Area logistics real estate company purchased the land for $310 million. The company previously purchased the land of the shuttered Hilltop Mall in Richmond.

The park is expected to operate for the next 11 years and cease operations at the conclusion of the lease. Cedar Fair purchased the land back in 2019 from the city of Santa Clara and intends to use the money in the purchase to help reduce its debt.

California's Great America first opened in 1976 and appears that it will close in the early 2030s.

Tara and I went maybe 15+ years ago. The place was really run down, not at all like I remembered it. There was a huge swimming area which we had not brought suits for and a lot of gang-like teen groups.

Before that, ED & DM went for a dormouse event - but that must've been like 30 years ago.

Last time I went was around 1990 (X was playing) and I remember being surprised by the metal detectors at the entrance.

I think Greg & I went there to see Starship. I remember going there to see The Monkees with the girl I took to my senior prom.

I have no idea when those occurred.

I saw two concerts there and one of them might have been Starship. I might have been there after that with a niece or nephew.

I remember when it was being built. My father would come and give reports about the fact that Fess Parker of Daniel Boone fame was spearheading the project. I'm pretty sure we went soon after it opened. My most vivid memory is of the food court and the french fries that came in a big cup. They were delicious.

Every summer, in my early teens, my friend and I would save all our money and go. We'd take the bus (the 23 or 24) to Valley Fair, then switch to the bus that would go to Great America. Then, the two of us would spend the entire day there and then take the bus back. Lots of opportunities for mayhem for two unattended minors, but we were mostly behaved.

Willard's Whizzer was the best rollercoaster. I hated The Tidal Wave - lots of hype and very long lines for a not so great ride. The Demon...meh. The Log Ride beat the Yankee Clipper due to the faster drop at the end - The Clipper had two humps to slow you down...

It was better when the mascots where all Looney Tunes characters.

The best thing I saw there was an IMAX film about the space shuttle. Absolutely gorgeous footage.

A different friend played trombone in the Dixieland Band for quite some time.

Where are the "Make Great America Great Again" memes?
