Well, today got weird.
As I was driving over HWY17, Kisu called to tell me that GM Johnny So died, most likely to covid. He was one of the last of his generation, a Kung Fu brother of the cf's and my Sifu, Wing Lam. I had met him last year for the first time at TCEC. He came with Peter Kwong - Rain from Big Trouble in Little China, who is a student of his. I was honored to finally meet GM So and aspired to do something with him for KFTC in the future. I came over early to set my mom up with a telechat with a dental surgeon. But just prior to that, the bossmang of YMAA called me, and at the same time my mom called Social Security because she lost her card and wants a replacement. I had tried to set her up earlier online but they sent me to the SS office but it was all shut down due to covid. Fortunately, we got out of both calls just prior to the telechat, which went okay and now my mom has major dental next week - an extraction and a crown replacement. But I did want to chat with the bossmang more. He's a good guy - he runs a tight ship but we're of the same generation so we bore witness to the martial biz from different coasts. And he helped his master build an empire, one that I hope to join soon. I just got word that Wes Letioa passed. He was a major supporter of TCEC. Greg might remember him (older dude, drak complexion, shaggy hair). I never quite connected with him. He wasn't very good but he brought students and constantly supported us, so I gave him face. He came to a lot of the afterparties too and at some point, would always corner me and tell me some stupid nonsensical shit. Not to speak ill of the recently dead, but later it turned out he was a Trumper, which confirmed my misgivings about him. My mom is watching the Cowboys/Ravens game. I just heard them play some Grateful Dead for the commercial break segue. My palm hurts like hell. That dog fang punctured deep. No sign of infection but it probably split some muscle meat. I need to escape into some video.

And then, Daniel Wu texts me and asks me out to dinner.
Which would be cool if not for the pandemic. Actually, it's still cool.

Still cool. It can be done with minimal risk

269: Early morning YMAA staff meeting. A lot of staff is on EST, plus there’s one guy in Portugal. Then back to the bungalow to prep for the press junket for Den, plus other odd tasks.
As for Daniel, hopefully something can be sorted. He’ll be at Laguna Seca doing some race car driving for a few days. It’ll be good to catch up. We haven’t talked since the beginning of the pandemic and that was for that vid interview I did for Den. He just had a hit film in PRC.

270: A lot of YMAA tasks plus sorting interview questions for Den - turns out my time is really short for the junket so I’ll have to be on point.

Good times. Don't get sick. Have fun with Mr. Wu.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

It was an extraordinary Friday - one of the better ones I've had during the shelter in place. It reminded me of the sort of adventures I had in days past.
I already posted on the Cobra Kai junket (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...7#pid43627). Now Dinner with Daniel. Daniel has been training to be a race car driver at Laguna Seca. He's hoping to race soon since he's been out of work for 18 months however he still collects on his advertising deals so he's in good shape. He bought a new house just when the pandemic hit and is up to 8 cars, his latest truck he refurbished. He drove up in a 30+ year old purple Porsche that used to be his dad's. His dad wanted something less sporty so he traded him with a new BMW. His dad hardly used it - only 70K miles - so it was in mint condition. But Daniel being into wrenching refurbished that too, keeping all the original parts that were still good (the leather interior was pristine) and juicing the engine. We had dinner at the Crow's Nest which has outdoor seating under the huge tent that they usually use for beer and food for the free beach concerts. We chatted about politics, mutual friends, dogs, family, racing, TV, movies, and martial arts of course. He gave me an earful about Emily. It was great to connect again. It was also the first time I've eaten in a restaurant since the pandemic began. I hope it was clean (it seemed to be - staff was very mindful and we were seated far away enough). We didn't do a selfie. I thought about doing a masked selfie because that struck me as funny. But we were keeping distance and it seemed inappropriate to always grab a selfie whenever I see him. He would love to see Stro. He's been watching a lot of stuff said he was intrigued. Message me that link. We'll see if he really watches it because he does keep busy.

272: Hoping the rain stops so I can do Kung Fu today. Might be the last time for a while if the lockdown happens. Beyond that I gotta lotta writin. And some housecleaning. The bungalow gets so dirty with Yuki when it rains.

Sounds like a good Friday, indeed. These rare meetings with friends are like gems.

It is strange how valuable small meetings are now. I really look forward to the next face2face DOOM gathering. We’re so overdue.
273: Well I had a bad case of writer’s block on Saturday. I jotted down a few ideas and organized some groundwork for a few of the upcoming articles but didn’t really move forward significantly on any of them. Nor did I do any chores. Only Tai Chi people showed up to Kung Fu and with the foggy wetness - the mizzle - it was a soft workout. After that, I took Yuki to the dog park where he had a great time, then frittered away my writing window. So I need to really knuckle down today and tomorrow and get some stuff done.

274: I have a guest appearance on Violet Li's stream first thing. She used to write for KFM and the Examiner. Since the pandemic struck, she's been doing these tai chi/qigong streams for free and asked me to be on her show like two months ago. I asked her to promote some YMAA things so it's kind of a trade. Plus I'm always amused to be the interviewee instead of the interviewer. It's from 8-9 PST.
Then it's more writing - those 4 YMAA & 6 Den pieces. Got a draft up for one of the YMAAs and maybe 90% of one Den and 50% of another (that one should fill out quickly with the transcription which I should get back very soon). Also have some YMAA tasks, a phone call and some other things. Plus I need to check in with my mom about her dentist appt tomorrow.

275: Today is all about my mom's dental work. She has a major extraction at the surgeon's and then she's getting a new crown next door at her regular dentist. I'll be doing her shopping while she's getting the work done.
FUCK! My car was broken into again. Someone must have hijacked my key code because there was no sign of entry. Stacy found the door ajar, the glove compartment open and empty and the CDs strewn over the passenger seat. It was parked in our driveway. A neighbor from down the street found most of the stuff strewn over her yard and was kind enough to return it. Most everything seems to have come back, including insurance, CDs, sanitizer, some disposable masks, and our CA state park pass, everything but our registration. Godammit. That's needed. There were some cops across the street, but they were dealing with unregistered vehicles on the other side of Seabright. I talked to them. They were helpful but didn't have anything beyond filing an electronic report, as I suspected. I'll do that later today because I have to get my registration replaced. And the Funkmobile, the junker car we inherited from our previous neighbor, is still unregistered. There's been a hold up at DMV because of the pandemic. We've been trying to solve that distantly but we have to go in and have been putting that off. So Stacy just took that car for a ride until the cops leave. I gotta go to my mom's now and get her sorted.

Police report submitted electronically. DMV registration reordered ($70).
My mom did well with her dental procedure. She says she's not in pain and it was quick. There was a lot of chaos doing it. The extraction surgeon had us down for a later time so we had to go home and come back. They admitted my mom, then called me back saying that they never received the e-consent form (which I brought just in case). Then the surgeon said it was an elective procedure and recommended against it, telling me of all the things that could go wrong with a 90 year old patient. They had me stay for the extraction, which was so fast. She just plucked that bad tooth so quickly. We walked from there to my mom's dentist and all went okay, so I ran my mom's shopping errands. Then when I got back, her dentist said there had been a lot of bleeding because she should've had the extraction after the crown. wth? But all is well now. My mom seems to be feeling okay. She says there's no pain. She's strangely tough that way. It's been a day. Anyone feel the earthquake? We noticed Yuki was distressed this morning but we assumed that was from the car break in.
