What is it about Keanu? Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? Little Buddha? The Matrix? Most of the time I find him irritating but every once in a while, he breaks new ground. I loved A Scanner Darkly. It captures tweaking. It's an homage to tweaking. It's a tweaker film. Visually stunning. It looked exactly like the world looks when your tweaking. A hilarious send-up of tweaker humor. Made me giggle a lot. As Over the Hedge was to RedBull, A Scanner Darkly is to tweaking. I recommend it high-ly. I may have to read the book. Downey is great, as is Rory Cochrane and Woody Harrelson. Winona is kind of predictable.
My only complaint is the soundtrack could have been edgier. Just like Lord of the Rings would have been better if Led Zepplin did the soundtrack, this film would have been greatly improved with a soundtrack by the Residents.

I wonder why the DM enjoyed and I thought it was so poor? I wonder where the divergance starts? Hmmm. It makes you wonder.
It was all downhill for me after the beginning bug scene. I found that funny. Poor dog. I expected to find the puppy all bloody after his masters ministrations.
I wanted a little more plot. I probably asked for too much. It seems we stumbled from tweak scene to tweak scene then all of a sudden we had a little drama and then it was over.
I did like the idea of the suits that shifted. I liked the irony of the policeman having to investigate himself. I questioned the point of using the rotoscope animation. It did work for the suit and the bugs but after that it just made me want to switch to Charles Schwab from my regular broker.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

...you probably don't drink beer during the superbowl either.
Trust me, if you've ever dealt with tweakers, or been one yourself, this film is freakin' hilarious. I still giggle when I think about aline last rites. It's a nervous tweaky giggle.

Rewatched this on Criterion, which just got renewed for me, gifted from a dear brother. It’s still awesome. I’m impressed at how well it holds up, both in animation style and relevance. The drug conspiracy, well, it’s all about conspiracies now, ain’t it? Leave it to Dick to nail a tale. And Keanu has completely won me over since 2006. Knowing now what he, Downey, Harrelson & Ryder have become, it makes this all the more fascinating.
