True Detective - Night Country

The episode opens on a native elk or caribou hunter in Alaska on the last sunset of the year (I think it said Dec 17th)…it’s the last moment of daylight…he’s about to take his shot and then something happens and the herd bolts.

There’s a scientific research outpost in the snow. Cut to the staff doing various off duty things while hunkered down in the facility. Something happens.

Cut to a police officer answering a call at a crab packing plant. I fight between an estranged couple. This sets the backstory for one of the two leads.

Cut to Jodie who’s investigating the disappearance of all the crew at the research outpost.

Now it’s dark…a long winter’s night. Weird stuff is happening everywhere and a cold case (pun intended) is connected with the current one bring the two leads together in another odd couple-like story.

It’s not bad, but So far it feels like a lot of atmosphere. I’m hoping things gel into something more compelling.

We saw Eps 01 and 02 last night and was very intrigued. There is a lot of weird stuff happening in Ennis, Alaska. Everyone has secrets. Everyone has an arc of some kind going on. There is so much to be explained and the filmmakers are in no hurry to do so, which is fine. Jodie Foster seems to be sleeping with everyone in town. She has children that are not her own and she appears to have lost a kid somewhere along the way. Best of all, everybody hates Sheriff Jodie. Her counterpart is Trooper Navarro who used to be on the force but Jodie got rid of her.

Navarro is investigating the murder of a native American woman which might be tied in to the problems at the research station. There are so many story threads happening. Everybody is awful. I will watch more.

We're many episodes in. Lots of awful folk. The mystery keeps remaining a mystery. I forgot to mention Christopher Eccleston (Dr. Who) plays Jodie's boss from the "big town". Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) is one of the more interesting townsfolk. John Hawkes (Deadwood) is one of the other officers on the Ennis police force. He's a tired old cop with a mail order bride coming over from Russia sometime soon.

I'm glad John Hawkes is sending more money for medicine for his mail order bride's mother.

Ep06 Well that episode, the finale, was all kinds of suck. Just mountains of crap that made no sense but had an eerie vibe. Final resolution of things that should have been developed more during the previous five episodes but thrown in at the end to keep the mystery going. I really liked the first five episodes but the last episode screwed the pooch.

Agreed...a bit of a bait and switch.
