Helen Mirren. Ian McKellan. Sounds good. Could be a lighthearted tricksy caper film, right? Perfect for a Saturday night in the middle of the Pandemic.
Not so much. It is a caper film. McKellan plays a swindler preying on Londoners using a real estate scheme. But then he stumbles across Mirren through an online dating service for older people. When McKellan finds out Mirren has some money set aside, he decides she will be his next mark.
But it's dark. There's grizzly murders and thuggery. There are flashbacks to Berlin during World War 2. There's also these two long flashbacks done with narration that just seemed awkward and long winded. I wish they could have found a way to blend those stories into the main story line better.
McKellan and Mirren do a good job, but just some the writing at the end is unwieldy.
Now, it could be I knew the switch ahead of time which kind of ruined the suspense, but the movie still came across as poor.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
