Raw (2016) by Julia Ducournau
#1
A vegetarian first-year veterinary student is hazed into eating raw meat, and thereafter develops a taste for it.

I stayed away from this for a long time.  Who needs yet another single-note movie only slightly valenced away from the vampire/werewolf mythos?  But reviewers kept raving about it on the web, until I finally decided to give it a gander just to prove myself correct.

Well, I was wrong.  It's hardly single note.  There's a sizable cast of characters interacting emotionally in so many ways.  Some of the actors give truly inspired performances, especially Garance Marillier in the lead role, and this is her first full-length film!  What a gutsy and outrageous performance.

Likewise, this is Julia Ducournau's first direction of a full-length film.  She has certainly started off her filmmaking career with a bang.

Oh, a caveat.  This is definitely not for the squeamish.
I'm nobody's pony.
