Damsel

The latest Millie Bobby Brown vehicle where she continues to rebrand herself as an action star. She doesn’t quite get away with it this time. You get the gist from the preview but it tries to set up a surprise when Princess Elodie (Millie) is married off to an affluent royal family and that ‘suspense’ drags on for longer than it should. Those royals have had a deal with the dragon for centuries and if I had Greg’s pesky inquiringness, I’d ask why the other kingdoms didn’t realize that princesses married off to this clan disappear regularly.

The tone changes when Elodie is cast into the dragon pit cave. It’s more of a fight for survival with the dragon voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo in her singular gravelly pitch. Angela Bassett is Elodie’s stepmom and Robin Wright is the evil queen. Dragon and princess play cat and mouse in a magical cave filled with glowing leeches and random icicle stalactites. Elodie’s formal bridal gown gets slowly reduced to a tattered miniskirt and she gets a sword, which is also kinda random but Millie looks rather fetching with a sword and less clothes plus she transforms into a more kickass heroine, like you do when you have less clothes and a sword.

On the whole, very predictable. Sure, there’s some female empowerment and that’s cool, but in the end there wasn’t enough novel ideas to keep me engaged. It was a lot of Millie cowering behind stalagmites as the dragon stalked her. I do like Millie. She seems much older in this than Enola Holmes but I guess that was a while ago and she’s grown up more.

Not D00M recommended.

I had hopes for this but then the terrible reviews came out....
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

Likewise.

It isn’t bad really - it’s just not outstanding. It’s flat. When Millie wields a sword and I’m not thrilled, it missed the mark.

I guess that’s bad now.

I had low expectations. Yes, it was predictable, but I was entertained. It looked good. I didn't recognize Angela Basset or Robin Wright.

Angela was the stepmom. Robin was the evil queen.
