In Tony Jaa news.
Quote:Monster Hunter
The Hollywood Reporter says Tony Jaa, Ron Perlman, and T.I. Harris have been cast in Paul W. S. Anderson’s film adaptation of Capcom’s Monster Hunter gaming franchise. Perlman will play Admiral, “the leader of the Hunter’s Crew,” while Harris is Link, “a sniper,” but Jaa will play the male lead, known only as The Hunter, like the protagonists of the monster-slaying games. Milla Jovovich was already set to start as Artemis.

I'm just waiting for DM to tell us he's already done the Jaa interview, had the set visit, and ate calamari off the craft service table.

mmmmm crafties!
Started a thread on this yesterday on KFM - http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/show...ter-Hunter
I met Jaa many years ago, before his embezzlement scandal. He did a demo at an SF Muay Thai school - only a few dozen came and maybe one or two other press people. The demo was awesome and he was really humble, like a Thai country boy, charming with mad skills.
He was actually a 'got qi?' master because I talked him into donning a T and posing for a pic. It was early in his career so he didn't know anything about endorsements or signing off on stuff like that.

You know how video games make great movies? Nope. Me neither.
Milla is an army squad commander. She leads her crew into the desert to find another missing squad. They get sucked into a dust storm with lightning and end up on another planet, an exotic desert filled with monsters. Giant sand triceratops. Giant spiders with scorpion stingers. Flaming dragons. Tony already lives there with a big bow that shoots arrows strapped with dynamite. And Ron is there too as a leader of the other humanoids, and a human sized cat chef. They fight monsters.
If this sounds dumb, it’s dumber than you think it sounds.
Okay, I confess, I fell asleep a few times but I don’t think I missed much. Lots of monsters, fire and explosions. Lots of monster killing.
There’s a scene poached from Alien where Milla wakes up in a spider web. Then there’s a poached take on the chest burster that’s so ew that it almost redeems the film fora few minutes.
Jaa v Jojovich is a crappy fight scene when their relationship is in the Enemy Mine zone. Milla sells action well and looks okay next to Jaa’s Muay Thai skillz but the fight is poorly choreographed and shot even worse. Jaa throws a few fancy aerial moves, but it’s one move one shot so the effort feels wasted.
Milla & Tony have no chemistry, although I blame Tony here because Milla is ok at what she does as a star - she still hawt and has a charm to her after so many Resident Evils.
Everyone has oversized cartoon compensating bone weapons and max max armor/attire.
Jaa speaks some made up alien language. It’s a bit annoying, once again casting the Asian as the ‘other.’ Of course, white Ron speaks English to white Milla. There’s some background characters like Milla’s squad and Ron’s tribe that are poc but almost forcibly so.
Not D00M recommended, despite several sword fights.
