It’s as good a sequel as possible considering it’s a half century old classic. Emily and Lin-Manuel have the pipes and steps to match Julie and Dick, but only one of the Sherman brothers survives so the songs just cannot touch the classics of the original. There are enough nods to stay true, and Emily’s Mary feels closer to the source books, plus the style and sensibility is on point, even with the animated bits. I predicted how the end would play out very early on. Still, I do enjoy a decent colorful musical and the updated effects don’t really compromise the spirit of the story. Mary remains practically perfect.
Odd side note - Julie was offered a cameo but stood aside so Emily could make Mary her own. Julie decided to make her cameo in aquaman instead.
