The Rites of Spring - SC Symphony @ SC Civic 10/27/18
#1
After BOO! ( http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...1#pid30441 ) to this, I feel as if I've traversed the musical spectrum pretty extreme this weekend, which makes my happy.

Debussy - Prelude to afternoon of a Faun: Stacy uses Debussy on her classical massage mix.  This piece was lovely, relaxing and almost put me to sleep. Even with the caturday catnaps, I was lulled to the brink of slumber.  But I made it through and enjoyed it - made me yearn for a massage.  This was all about the flautists who really rose to the occasion

Gershwin - An American in Paris: Having just been one, I couldn't quite hear the Paris.  There was one musical passage that reminded me of walking the Seine, and I could definitely hear the rollicking American, but Gershwin always sounds like old B&W movies about Manhattan to me.  It's a frantic piece, and you gotta love those seal horns.  All about the trumpeteers, followed by the brass and winds.

During the intermission, I bumped into our teenage neighbor, who was there for a school assignment.  We always expect to run into people we know there, but that was one of the first for me.

The Rite of Spring - Stravinsky: A pivotal piece and one of Stacy's all time favs.  It's an amazing work, pillaged by so many modern composers like that ultimate poacher John Williams who you can clearly hear echoing passages from this.  It leaps from the magic of nature to thunderous dark charges, a real workout for the percussionists, who deservedly got the most applause at the end.

Now you may be asking, why these pieces and why Spring in autumn?  Good feckin question.  Maybe it's in the program.  Stacy is always befuddled by the SCS pairings, but then walks away getting it and marvelling at the boldness of the selections.  As the first two pieces played, she said she could hear the elements of RoS and was again, thoroughly satisfied.  I felt the pieces went together quite well but I'm not sure why.  Nigel, the lead violin 1st chair superstud wasn't there.  However, this showcases each section of the orchestra, given ample latitude for solos, and there were no guests this time. It was a wonderful opportunity showcasing the quality of SCS, which continues to improve with each concert.  Bravo, Stewart, BRAVO!
