Heard some nice radio tributes today. One on KPFA while driving this afternoon, another this morning, I think on KZSC. The DJs on the morning show pondered why Sly's sound changed and slowed up in his later years. They though he was mellowing out but I'm guessing it was the drugs.

Sadly, he only had a few good years of making music, then it was more about drugs. (Sort of like Marvin Gaye.) His Greatest Hits album (Did we all have that one?) came out in 1970. Then the Family Stone drifted away and no one wanted to book him for shows because he was so erratic. Miles Davis wanted to work with him - Davis said he "almost wore out those first two or three records" and listened to Sly a lot during the Bitches Brew sessions - but when he went to see Sly, there were guns and coke everywhere, so he didn't stay.

Yes, some great music, but sadly too many drugs.

That's worse than swords and pot, right?

Right?!?

Asking for a friend.
