Skatalites @ Moe’s Alley
#1
My trusty accomplice enabler has a cold so he bailed. It was raining which kills the outdoor patio vibe. I thought about bailing but I can sleep in this morning, so i went for it. It turned out to be a fun night.

Boom Draw wasn’t as tight as when I saw them last Feb. Not sure why. I saw their set list and they skipped a few songs at the end.

The DJ, who I didn’t know, was spinning vinyl 45s, all old ska, a lot that I didn’t recognize. Ran into 2 old friends, someone who used to hang around JM who moved out of state, but got married and just moved back. It was nice to see her. And DJ Aye Que Linda. Good to see her too; she DJed at Yellowman.

It’s the 60th anniversary of the Skatalites. There are no original members, but Stewart on keys has been with the band like 47 years. Several of the players were old skool session players - now a 7 piece.

I was front of stage, right in front of the horns, so close i flinched all night from Gordon’s trombone. It was like ska in 3D. Right in front of the horns was the place to be. It was all about the trombone & Smith’s trumpet. They had jazz level jamming skills.

Someone spilled some greasy chips behind me that turned my space as slippery as ice. Between that and dodging the trombone, it was like some surreal ska boxing training. I was next to this cute couple dressed in full on two tone and Jack (short for Jacqueline), a mom of 2 who looked like a cross between Michelle Yeoh & Maggie Q, but she was tiny, like 4.5 ft tall. We chatted each other up a bit at set break. She came up from Monterey and along with the two tone couple, we were the front row.

A fun night. Irie. My pedometer says 3.5 mi. The .5 was not even walking Yuki. I took him on 2 walks today but both were just a few blocks for him to pee (on everything after close examisniffing) and poop between cloudbursts. It was weird here all day - storm clouds & blue sky, cold, and sudden dour pours Thar would last like 5 minutes and then lessen down to a light drizzle. We managed to dodge the downpours. I’m calling it 3 miles of skanking. Not as rigorous as China Cats but there’s the 2 mile walk. I drive to Moe’s.

The Dour Pours just make everyone sad
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

The radio man says the snow pack is over 90% for the 3rd year in a row which hasn't happened in quite a long time.

I tried to rally various people to go, but it was last minute and with the continued rain, I just didn't want to taunt Hwy 17.

I ended up working on my mom's taxes while listening to Skatellites on Spotify which is not a bad way to do taxes.

Aw man, that would've been fun, but totally understandable. Nobody wants to hump hwy17 during the dour pours. Heck, I almost balked and Moe's is less than 2 miles from me.
