This is the top Bollywood box office earner of this year and has been eagerly anticipated as it took 8 years to make. It’s Bollywood so it’s almost 3 hours long. But it only feels like 6…
Oh man, what bombastic ridiculousness. It’s the first of the astraverse trilogy, a superhero movie based on Hindi myth, akin to The Eternals conceptually. I was into it at the start because the opening dance is an over the top Diwali festival in Mumbai (remember Stacy & I were living in Pune which is near Mumbai when Diwali was held and it was mind blowing). An EDM DJ (Ranbir Kapoor who I’ve heard of but not seen until this) falls for a hottie in the crowd (Alia Bhatt who was in RRR and is married to Kapoor irl) and they have a typical Bollywood love at first sight romance. They do have genuine chemistry and Alia is truly gorgeous (Ranbir is too). But the DJ is ‘the chosen one’ and there’s a quest to recover the 3 pieces of the magical brahmastra, which can destroy the world.
It begins with Shah Rukh Khan fighting off Mouni Roy, a gorgeous villainess with glowing eyes and her two huge henchmen. I love Shah Rukh and I’m thinking right on, this will be cool. The fight is a crazy superhero fight with energy blasts and a lot of crazy physics. Then Shah Rukh dies, never to appear again.
This film is so painfully full of itself. The cheesy energy blast fights keep going and going, in gratuitous slo-mo. And there’s plenty of longwinded explanations about the astras and how Ranbir has to find his source of power (could it be love, ya think?) it’s horribly predictable.
There’s a good dance number at the beginning at the Mumbai Diwali but nothing notable afterwards.
Disney+ only provides an English dubbed version which was distracting because I didn’t have to read subs. Very disappointing.
Not D00M recommended.
