A rockumentary about Garcia & Grisman, made by the Grisman family. David ‘Dawg’ Grisman is one of the top mandolin players and collaborated with Jerry on several albums, some of my favs even. It’s bluegrass, old tyme, folk & sea shanties, even a fantastic album of children’s songs.
The talking heads, including a lot of Dawg himself, repeatedly pontificate about his special their relationship was - and we get that because you can hear their virtuosity in the music. Storywise its a bit flat, and the interviewees aren’t that notable - no one from the Dead. Bela Fleck is the stand out musician; the rest of the Old and in the Way band too.
What is good is the music - some home vid of the legendary Sweetwater show, some recording seasons and the Warfield show, which we were at - that show is in my top 10 ever. We had tickets and it was ecstatic on every level. The doc goes into Arabia - a jazzy multicultural instrumental piece and watching the footage of that brought me right back.
Nothing warms my heart like watching those rare Jerry smiles when he’s satisfied with the jam.
Only recommended for DOOM deadheads.
