Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth Tamsyn Muir
#1
I thought I reviewed the first book (Gideon) but the search says “go fish”. The thumbnail review was “Lesbian necromancers exploring a haunted castle in space”. That’s a decent hook, but these books are soooooo much more. First class world building, mystery, murder, really fucked up family stuff, lots and lots of sword fights. Gideon herself is great fun (crude, direct, funny, bloody-minded) and she and Harrow have depth.

The sequel, “Harrow the Ninth” picks up where the last book ended, but the events of the previous novel are called into question. Written stylistically differently than Gideon because Harrow is a very different person.

The prose is terrific and the pacing is great.

The bad news is that I now have to wait for book III.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

I liked the first book. Couldn't get into the second book.

Stylish. Yeppers.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
