Another Kurosawa, a year earlier than One Wonderful Sunday (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=5656) although it also echoes his anti-war sentiments. It's a fictionalized account of the Takigawa incident - a leftist student fights for academic freedom during the rise of fascism prior to WWII. There's a golf scene that hit so close to home for today's politics. The student's professor is sympathetic and their university is shut down. The professor's daughter marries the leftist, who gets caught and dies in prison, then she goes to support her in-laws who have been branded as pariahs and are living in poverty. There's a very young Takashi Shimura as a villainous Police Commissioner 'Poison strawberry' who interrogates the wife.
Best of all, the wife's name is Yukie. Yuki was confused hearing his name on TV. He's had a tough day.
No sword fights. Only recommended for DOOM cinephiles.
