Steve (Martin): A documentary in two parts.
Part one covers the rise and end of Steve Martin's stand-up career and all its struggles. Part one briefly talks about his movie career but not a lot. It is a very straight forward but well done documentary. Mart in plays a big role in the production.
Part two covers Steve now. It does catch us up on his romances and marriage but mostly it's about now. How he is back to doing stand up. There are long stretches about his book about his time in the movies done in comic book form. The movie touches briefly on his music career but not a lot. It's mostly about his current show with Martin Short. The second part is ultimately very sad as Martin struggles to find love and deals with his father issues.
There are some holes in the story. Bernadette Peters is never mentioned but does appear in one shot. Talk about his films seems more of an afterthought. But maybe since there were so many films it would be hard to focus on any of them for too long. His current show, Murders in the Building, only gets a few minutes, too.
Overall, it's a good primer on his life.
