I discovered this author after stumbling across some of his writing online and enjoying it. Here he looks at some ancient Greek and Roman philosophers and gives brief profiles of people today trying to use those old ideas in their own lives. Interesting and enjoyable on the whole but I thought the later chapters, on Epicureans, Cynics, and Plato were a little weak. The early chapters on the Stoics were the best, and the books would have been much better if that was all he looked at.He also bring in modern psychology and how it's been influenced by these philosophers, particularly Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Stoicism.
Probably not Doom recommended, unless you have an interest in ancient philosophy. I read it because I don't remember much of anything from the philosophy intro class I took.
