Writing Kung Fu (1979)
#1
This has been in my Amazon Prime queue forever just because of the title. Turns out it’s one of only two films directed by Bolo Yeung. It’s one of those Kung Fu indie flicks, from a studio that I’ve never heard of and the print is terrible, ruddy, dark, scratchy, maybe shot in 16mm or super 8.

But the Kung Fu is excellent. There’s a weak scholar being bullied. He learns Kung Fu from a drunk, a blind man, and a hobo. His calligraphy is exquisite. There’s this poetic angle where masters call out there moves. It’s quanpu - the lyrics - so there’s a level of meaning that doesn’t translate well. There’s also this weird Christian vibe with the hero.

Bolo is merciless. He kills innocents, including a cute little girl and the two female characters. The girl death is harsh because it’s unexpected. The 2nd female is a martial arts expert and is left hanging naked upside down, alluding to a brutal rape. He’s only shirtless once. With his pecs, it’s amazing he can even sawdust into shirts. Despite his blown musculature, he can really move. He plays flute Kung Fu, so his killing has its own soundtrack.

No sword fights. Not really DOOM recommended unless you’re a Bolo fan.
