Double World

The latest by director Teddy Chan. It just hit Netflix although I watched it via my ninja site sans subtitles so there's a chance that the dialog really sux with may spoil it but it's more about the visuals anyway. Based on a MMORPG, it's surprisingly engaging, imaginative and very visual - a fantasy sword & sorcery tale about an imperial martial arts tournament of epic proportions. The costumes and CGI world are opulent - a tale of revenge and complex relationships with a despicable villain. Lots of fight scenes that constantly level up like a videogame should. Dragons, crazy weapons, absurd tests, heavy on the wuxia, high flying Kung Fu (choreographed by veteran ultravi master Stephen Tung), sanguineous and immensely colorful.

Plenty of sword fights. I'd say like 40% sword fight overall. DOOM recommended.

Definitely entertaining.

How was the dialog? I felt I could follow it pretty well with my broken Mandarin. It didn't seem overly complex and I do understand family terms so I think I picked up on all of the relationships. Sometimes dumb dialog can be a dealbreaker.

I like the heroine characters a lot.

And the battle on the chain web over the spiked pit with the iron boulders was off the hook.

Do the heroines ever leap over a hurdle and get freeze-framed with legs outstretched?

Asking for a fiend friend.

The subs kept pace and were fine. It was unnoticeable, so that = Great.

Hmmmm. Not sure. There was a lot of flying about and one of the teams was three hotties with double sickles so maybe? There was a lot of hair issues with the two heroines. One pulls a Mulan and shaves. The other is a dreadlock (so close to mi ‘eart) and her hair fate is tragic and painful.

Good to know about the subs. It didn’t seem that dialog heavy but it’s tough to tell when I’m trying to translate in my head.

DM will be pleased to know that "sanguineous" appears in the subtitles within the first three sentences.

The scenes are cut so tightly that sometimes there isn't time to finish the subtitles and also take in the eye candy, and in places I opted for just the eye candy.  Not certain you need all the exposition, or even it's possible to grok it all in one showing.

The girl (young woman) of the good trio worked best for me.  The older guy of the good trio seemed weakest, with his overused turgid look of barely restrained hatred.  Then again, that might have been the script or director's fault.

Errant riddle inspired by this film:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To loan a farmer an egg, on condition he bring it back in a few days.

She was my fav character too. Loved that sword. Compensate much?

Her story arc caught me off guard. I didn't think they'd go there with her.

I liked the freed slave gal too. And the villain. The villain was so villainous. I luv villainous villains.

The villainously villainous villain was quite...I can't think of the exact word, but he was a bad hombre.

I did not care for how the wimmin-folk were treated.

Yippee!

Can't wait for you to post your acceptance speech.

You and Dr. Yeti are right about the villain.  I remember when Siskel and Ebert (or was it Ebert and Roper) paid tribute to villains in one of their episodes, pointing how a great villain is so important to making a good movie truly great.

I neglected to note the villain in this, because, well, he was so villainously villainous that I was anxious to quickly rid him from my idyllic mind.  He surprised me in just how abominably villainousl he could be.

is what enables a movie to work.

Yeah, that villainous one scene, you know the one, the epitome of villainy, that one really nailed it. So villainously villainous.

I thought it was Andy Kaufman who extolled the power of villains when he got into pro wrasslin. Maybe they both did.
