Sage the Gemini @ UCSC Quarry 10/20/18

This was only the 2nd show at UCSC's new Quarry Amphitheater.  It can house 2200 - tonight all free tickets were given to students but only about 1600 actually turned out. They had a grand time for a very mediocre hip hop sodomite (always rapping about ass & booty).  There were some ankle twists, a big fight, some gatecrashers (for a free show?), some trippers, one barfy drunk.  Nice audience tho, clean college kids.  The crew was part RM and part EMS slugs, a student group after that Eden show I worked for UCSC back in 14 - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3100

So nice to do local shows. I was home in 10 mins and that was with dropping off a friend. Also good to get in on the ground floor here. Hope this can built into something.

3 DJs opened. That plus Sage was a big bucket of meh. But the sound was good - redwood forest absorb sound like sound tiles so it’s really clean, no reverb. When I was here 3 decades ago, it was just a pit.

Elaborating on the EMSlugs.  This student group emerged after we worked that East of Eden show in 2014.  It has grown to earn school grants and to cover many on campus events like the Ultimate frisbee championship and the Holi festival, and has been giving out free BLS training to students.  The UCSC Police Chief wanted to add BCon to that (Bleeding control) which doubles the cost - when the club balked at the proposal because it would half the amount of students that could take the course with the grant money, the Chief matched it, just to make it happen.  It's a bunch of young engaged kids and they asked me to do a presentation for them.  Another potential University speaking gig.  I guess I didn't need that PhD after all.

There was also a protest across campus.  Chancellor Blumenthal was at a dinner where he was courting potential donors for scholarships.  Blumy, as the kids call him, has earned the wrath of the student body - not sure why because all the EMSlugs thought he was okay.  They seemed to feel it was unwarranted, that he had become a fallguy for general rage at authority now.  The Chief asked if he could direct all the protesters here and the Quarry General Manager said 'sure!'  And they did come, after the protest, which was just the bump the show needed to keep the party rollin.  The kids had a great time.  For many, it was their first concert.  I'm very enthusiastic about what this might become.  It's my hood and one of my alma maters, although I never got hooded there as I intended.
