Quote:The English Custom of the Groaning Cheese
John Farrier

In 1777, John Brand, an English folklorist, published Observations on Popular Antiquities. In it, he described the customs of the people of England that might not be known among the upper classes of that nation.

In one passage, he wrote about a custom in which a newborn child is passed through a hole cut in the center of a wheel of cheese on the day of the child's christening. In some villages, the cheese is then cut and distributed to women as an aphrodisiac.

As with previous viral stories about history, my librarian spidey senses alerted to a potential fraud. I can say that Brand may have been incorrect, but he did actually describe this custom in his book.

New York, you’re officially invited to Cheese Rave—an Eventbrite party. We've teamed up with culinary expert and television personality, Antoni Porowski, who's excited to introduce the Cheese Rave to the world.
This event is co-hosted by two of our favorite New Yorkers (and It-List curators) who are combining their individual passions for cheese (Rachel Brotman aka The Carboholic) and late-night dancing (DJ Niyah Badass) into a night you won’t soon forget.

This free cheese-themed rave is giving weird-and-wonderful party of the year vibes with:
  • A one-of-a-kind curated cheese experience courtesy of Metro Cheese Club, who will be keeping the spread full from the time DJ Swami Sound kicks the music off (8:30-9pm) until wev shuts the club down (12-1am).
  • Two free bevvies from a drink menu that’s obviously been carefully chosen to pair with (you guessed it) cheese.
  • DJ sets by ODALYS, dj mOma, and Jubilee, who will ensure the dance floor stays as funky as the gruyère.
  • Vegan cheeses and gluten-free crackers* so everyone can indulge and enjoy.

Doors open at 8:30. Cheese, beats, and dancing last all night…

Why the hell am I not here?!?!?

One of my many fantasies that now might be on the verge of manifesting.

I'm no monger.

I did have a monger on my Jedi nite krew for a while. That was awesome. He'd bring his block and everything. And he knew his reggae well. Sad that he fell from the pack...

Quote:The Sicilian Sport of Cheese Rolling

In Novaria di Sicilia, a neighborhood of Messina, people play an unusual sport as part of the Carnival celebrations. It's called Lancio del Mairochino.

Traditional Sports explains that residents take a wheel of the local pecorino cheese and wrap it with a 3-meter long length of twine. Then they take turns hurling the cheese down the street, using the string as a sling. The goal is to reach the bottom of the hill with as few tosses as possible.

The sport dates back to the 1600s when cheesemakers practiced the sport as a way to test the hardness of a cheese and thus its readiness for consumption.
