Sailor Moon R (1993)
Billed as a Sailor Moon ‘movie’ this is only an hour long. But it’s dense. It delves into Mamaro’s past, and implies he might be bi, bi with an alien boy no less. That alien boy, Fiore, harnesses the ultimate space flower for Mamo, which contains a bikini-clad demo ness that shoots vine tentacles from her arms that suck life energy turning people into zombies by reanimating them with vines. Sailor Moon gets super lily of you dwell on it too long. It also speaks to the origins of Tuxedo Mask’s rose fetish. This is later in the story as the Sailor Guardians know Mamo is Tuxedo Mask and Chibi-USA is there. Sailor Moon has a major Disney death but once again, the universe is saved. It’s weird watching Sailor Moon without Tara. We never finished all of it. There was so much - it’s a huge franchise. But it was good to be back in the sailor-verse. Such a trippy show. Seen on Hoopla - there are 2 other ‘movies’ there as well.

Sailor Moon S (1995)
Another hour long yet dense story. This snow alienness plans the freeze the world with her snow harpy henchwomen, and the Sailor Guardians are called to punish them in the name of the moon. It’s all the Sailors, including Neptune & Uranus who are lesbian lovers and Pluto, who wields a magic staff. Usagi is armed with a series of wands and a chalice - not sure where that came from - either forgot or never got far enough in the series. There’s a lot of fighting. Meanwhile there’s an unrequited love story subplot. Luna gets sick and is almost run over because she’s so feverish. She’s rescued by a handsome man who is obsessed with the legendary moon goddess Kaguya (also the name of the alienness). He’s infected by a crystal shard of a comet and engaged to an astronaut about to go on her first flight. Luna falls in love with this guy and struggles with it because - well, Alina is a cat. She’s a magical girl cat and Usagi’s familiar. I did not get misty at the unrequited love fallout for Luna because it would be silly to get that invested in an anime. Nope. Totally dry eyed. The dubbing in these Hoopla versions is atrocious. I’m not sure I’m going to watch the third one. The voices are so bleating in English. Spoils it.
