Quote:The Expanse Season 5 Did Finish Filming Ahead of Shutdowns
The Expanse actress Shohreh Aghdashloo reveals the science fiction series finished filming season 5 before the Hollywood shutdowns began.
1
Shohreh Aghdashloo, who stars as Chrisjen Avasarala in The Expanse, recently revealed confirmed the series finished shooting season 5 before the coronavirus shutdowns began. The sci-fi show explores the adventures of those living in a solar system taken over by humans. It has a large cast of characters, with many new ones introduced each season. The Expanse is based on the popular and fairly recent novel series by James S. A. Corey. It consists of eight already released novels, as well as several novellas and short stories. The series is actually the brainchild of two different authors, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, who write under one name.
The Expanse TV show aired its first three seasons on Syfy but was cancelled in May 2018. Luckily, Amazon Prime Video swooped in to save the series following a fan campaign, picking it up for season 4 later that month. The fourth season consisted of 10 episodes and dropped December 2019. Fans also went into season 4 knowing it wouldn't be the end of The Expanse, as Amazon renewed the series for season 5 before the fourth even aired. The fifth season doesn't yet have a release date.
However, Aghdashloo had some good news for fans earlier this week, confirming The Expanse was able to complete filming on the upcoming season before the coronavirus shuttered productions across the world. Aghdashloo shared the news on Twitter, along with a thank you to Zoom for helping her interact with cast mates during the lockdown. She also used the #ScreamingFirehawks hashtag, a reference to the series. Take a look at Aghdashloo's post below:

Although we were able to finish shooting season 5 on time, we are all scattered all over the world in quarantine now.

This information about season 5 means The Expanse is better off than some series that had to cut their seasons short by a few episodes. As the network TV season was close to the end of its usual filming time, shows like Grey's Anatomy and the Arrowverse series on The CW have been forced to end with episodes not intended to serve as finales. The production shutdowns were even more problematic for series such as Supernatural and Empire, both of which were in their final seasons. Luckily, cast and creatives from both of those shows are either planning a proper farewell for later, or are at least hopeful they may be able to do one. With no timeline yet on when TV shows and movies may be able to resume production, it's hard to know when scripted shows will be back in full force.
Fans of The Expanse should be relieved by this confirmation about season 5, as it means the show is one step closer to a release date announcement. The coronavirus could still have an impact on post-production. However, some series have been able to work around that by having production members work from home. On others, like The Walking Dead, this hasn't been possible. At the very least, fans now know filming on The Expanse wasn't affected by the ongoing pandemic.

I almost never read fiction now, not since I've tuned into sitonmyfacebook.
Hate to burst your Drummer dreams, but it's all acting. She's nothing like that in real life.
Okay, I fibbed. I love bursting your Drummer dreams. At least Bobbie's accent is legit.

That’s OK. It was the character I found so appealing.

The Expanse has officially set course toward a bittersweet threshold crossed by many-a-beloved shows: an advance renewal for its final season.
Indeed, as the beloved and beleaguered sci-fi series prepares to premiere its fifth season in December, Amazon Studios has announced the renewal for a sixth and final season for The Expanse, as Deadline reports. Interestingly, while showrunner Naren Shankar and most of the main cast are expected to return for Season 6—notwithstanding plot developments in the upcoming Season 5—the sixth frame will bear a notable absence with the reported ousting of cast member Cas Anvar, who, having played Alex Kamal since the beginning of the series, became embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations this past summer.
“From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers,” expresses executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also co-CEOs/co-Founders of Alcon Television Group. “We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”
Based on the literary franchise of James S.A. Corey (the collaborative nome de plume of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse, a production of Alcon Entertainment, first took shape back in December 2015 as a broadcast offering for Syfy, set in a vision of a far-future (roughly in the early 2300s,) in which humanity has widely colonized the solar system, leaving the fate-joined antihero crew of liberated gunship the Rocinante forced to navigate familiar social, political and military dynamics, just on a galactic scale between Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt. Said main cast crew consists of names such as Steven Strait’s James Holden, Dominique Tipper’s Naomi Nagata, Wes Chatham’s Amos Burton and the ousted Cas Anvar’s Alex Kamal.
Amazon’s confirmation of The Expanse’s final season may not go down well with its fandom, but it does cap-off what has been an unlikely lease on life that very few shows—beloved or otherwise—will ever experience. Indeed, the series ran for three seasons on Syfy until a 2018 cancelation by the network. Yet, the initial run generated acclaim and a vocal fandom, which put together an online petition for the series to be picked up by a noteworthy streaming platform. In a rare win for the petition phenomenon, Amazon Studios granted the series the reprieve it sought; a move announced in 2018 by head honcho Jeff Bezos himself at the apropos setting of the International Space Development Conference. With the show’s manifestation as an Amazon Prime Video streaming exclusive with Season 4 back in December 2019, and Season 5 coming in December 2020, it will ultimately double its life post-Syfy-cancelation with the now-confirmed Season 6.
Lament over the imminent ending aside, fans of The Expanse can still look forward to two full seasons, starting with the three-episode premiere of Season 5 on Wednesday, December 16. After that, Season 6 is tentatively scheduled to commence production on January 20, 2021, presumably setting things on course to similarly arrive later in the year.

And we're back!
S5E1: A quick catch up with the Roci crew. Amos is in fine form, bringing the mayhem. Alex and Naomi are dealing with their estranged kids. Holden is sidelined but wants to do good. Meanwhile Chrisjen is moving her chess pieces and Fred is toying with... the proto-molecule. The threat of Marco looms over everyone. Beloved Bobby is undercover and full of angst because she's close to the big bust.
No sign of Drummer. Sorry Yeti.
This is a prep ep. Not much happens really. It's just setting it up to explode again. The feel of the show is a tad more spectacular. I still love it's sci fi vision. The Expanse universe is so rich in detail, and feels so solid.
I'm hooked again, but I'm not going to binge it. I'm going to savor it.
Only the first 3 episodes are up so far.
If any other DOOM belters want to do an AP watch party, gimme a shout. I've been curious to try that function.
I really want a functional Expanse space suit. It doesn't have to hold up in space. It just has to shield me from viruses. Any style would do but I'd prefer Bobby's space marine armor, if I even had the option.
