That was some tasty ultravi.

For a moment, I regretted not writing something about this. But then I remembered that I did back in Sep 22 for Den. That article succumbed to a cliche ending question (a weak writing device when you don’t have a better conclusion). I asked - Will Amazon’s Road House be able to live up to the original?

Well, it does. It even exceeds it on some levels. Jake nails what he’s doing with the role, and even gives Dalton some shallow depth (I know, oxymoron, but it’s still Road House so it’s still shallow). Jake makes Dalton his own. He looks great - chiseled and yoked. There’s some adjustments to the characters but it’s essentially the same story.

It preserves some of the cheesiness but doesn’t dare challenge the gratuitous 80s cheese. There’s no boobs, just some ass (not the ass you want to see but it works for this). Even the bar bands are pretty rockin’. And the fights are solid - Jake sells a punch astonishingly well and manages some complex sequences. The action and stunt sequences are superb.

What really sells it is Conor. He was a great UFC bad boy and he’s an over the top villain. Talk about selling a punch. Conor can move. His strikes have that authentic attitude and his character is basically a monster asshole, not far from how he is in real life.

Totally D00M recommended.

So much ass. I had that ass, I'd show it as well. No, I wouldn't. That ass needs its own movie.

Not bad. Not great. I got a lot of eye rolls from the Queen. I was trying to watch it without her in chunks but she gave in. She was disappointed. Hated the original but watched it a million times back in the day.

I got the Quiet Man explanation about Dalton's reasoning for not wanting to fight. The slap fight was still the best. Del's death was also superb. And Conor. What a jerk. Anarchy incarnate. I loved him. I'm surprised he agreed to not winning a fight. Usually egos are too big for that. And yet.

I don't like my heroes killing people. It seems to be bad form. I also stepped out for a minute to the loo and completely lost the plot about the missing cash and what was up with that. I was gone for like a second an all of a sudden everyone is demanding their cash back. I could go and watch this seconds, but no. I'll stand pat.

The fights were over the top.

Did you make it to the after credit scene? Even more ass.

But I would totally watch a film dedicated to Conor's character, regardless of ass. Such a spicy villain. It's all about a good villain for me.

I've been reading a lot of negative reviews on the web. Most say it doesn't live up to the original, but I suspect those critics haven't gone back and rewatched the original lately. It has not stood the test of time. It's gloriously 80s, but the 80s haven't aged that well.

My only criticism is Jake didn't drop the 'pain don't hurt' line. Otherwise it exceeded my expectations, which isn't saying too much really.

I did make it to that scene.

The first thing the Queen said was "They dropped the 'Pain don't hurt line'". She also missed San Elliot.

Ha! I agree with tQ on Sam too. They totally could've worked him in. Sam could play that same character and it would've totally worked.

I did not miss the mullet.

Srsly Scott?

RE: Road House (1989) - Greg - 03-27-2024

I read Scott Adkins and my brain decided that was the Dilbert creator......

CGI fights? I mean in the shot in the tweet, Gyllenhall actually hit Connor with the door enough to leave a bruise.

RE: Road House (1989) - Drunk Monk - 03-27-2024

There were several CGI enhanced scenes but I thought they worked really well.

RE: Road House (1989) - Greg - 03-27-2024

The ass wasn't CGI!

RE: Road House (1989) - Drunk Monk - 03-27-2024

I wasn't looking that closely but I'll take your word on that...
