This movie poses the interesting question of what if when Sherlock Holmes as he got older suffered from Alzheimer's? The movie then proceeded to offer a very boring answer.
Ian McKellan plays Holmes at the age of 92 as he struggles to remember the solution to his last case which he felt Watson got wrong in the last story. But his memory is full of holes and only the help of a precocious young boy and his questions, can help him come to the conclusion.
First off, if I had known Laura Linney was going to be in the film I would have second thoughts about viewing it. Something about her just rubs me the wrong way. There are a lot of plots and sub-plots in this film and none of their conclusions really satisfies. It goes meta at times as Sherlock goes to the cinema to a Sherlock Holmes film. A few times we get to see Sherlock do his deductive reasoning bit. Even the young boy asks him to do the thing to describe what someone has been up to.
But overall, it all feels a bit twee. There are better incarnations of Holmes out there right now and I plan to watch them. This one adds nothing to the cannon.
