The Amateur - thatguy - 07-20-2025

It's on Hulu, but my Hulu app is somehow borked, so I watched it on Hulu by way of Disney+...so is it Disney or Hulu?

Regardless, it was a clichéd/formulaic procedural revenge movie. Really no action...Raimi is an intelligence wonk that works in the bowels of the CIA and learns of some covert ops. Mrs Maisel, his wife, (who seems a bit annoying to me) goes on a trip to London for a conference. Later, he is called upstairs and is informed that his wife was murdered in a terrorist attack. He starts investigating. When the people in charge don't seem to be doing their due diligence, he leverages his knowledge of said covert ops to get backing support/training so that he can go after the responsible parties. They don't think he's capable, but (as you've seen in the trailer), he is...

I don't think they built up the relationship between he and his wife enough to believe that he is actually as driven to revenge as he is. The beginning and end are bookended with a bit about him restoring a Cessna and there's one spot in the middle where an associate mocks him for that and "wanting to fly into the clouds" and prove himself. One of the end shots is of the wife's tombstone which has some line about  "into the clouds", and the film ends with him taking the plane from the old barn, taxiing across the field and then flying into the clouds.

Seems totally disconnected with the rest of the story...

Meh. Not terrible. Not recommended.
