Holy Robe of Shaolin (1985) - Drunk Monk - 03-23-2025 I have this distinct memory of ED making a stupid pun at one of the scenes in this film and chuckling at himself as he often did with those puns. That scene was not in the movie. Must’ve been another one. Another installment of my ‘filmed at Shaolin Temple’ research. It was a good review. I remember bits, like that insane fire stunt, but didn’t make the connections about it being filmed at Wudang, about Yu Guangrong being the villain (he frequently opposes Jackie Chan), about all the wushu champs in this, and how the training sequence is just like Shaolin Temple (Jet Li’s debut). The fight choreo is top notch - long complex acrobatic scenes but somehow felt more like classic Shaw instead of the wushu wave of the 80s. It is very derivative of the Shaolin Temple trilogy, but it just forms come together as well. All the elements are there but it lacks the humor and the acting talent. There’s a scene that makes absolutely no sense. The kids are being chased through the streets by the royal guard and they get pinned between their pursuers and archers. The archers release a volley of arrows, only sticking the eldest monk. Then the kids are watching him die by the riverside, far from where they were with no pursuers in sight. It was jarring my confusing - like the filmmakers just bailed and went to the next scene without rhyme or reason. I wondered if there was a scene in between that was omitted but I can’t imagine anything that could resolve the plot flaw. Seen on YouTube but a poor resolution version. D00M recommended. |
