Hit Monkey - Drunk Monk - 02-23-2025 Some Marvel that escaped Disney+ Jason Sudekis voices a drunk wisecracking assassin who gets double crossed in Japan and after slaying his betrayers, stumbles off into the forest bleeding out. He is rescued by hot spring bathing macaques. One ‘monkey’ objects to rescuing him. Then hit men come for the assassin and take out all the monkeys but the rogue one. The monkey will team up with the assassin and go on a rampage. George Takei & Olivia Munn are also voice actors here. It’s gratuitously sanguineous but the animation is stilted. That kills the vibe because most animation set in Japan are anime, where the bar on quality and style is set high. I may watch a few more eps (10 1/2 hours) before we drop Hulu. It’s not great so far but there’s a glimmer of potential. Not yet sold but not invested either. We shall see. RE: Hit Monkey - Drunk Monk - 02-24-2025 Watched a few more eps. It’s getting better. I even laughed out loud at something but now o forget what that was. The monkey is incredibly violent and lethal but has a good heart. He only grunts but when he’s speaking to other animals, dogs, cats, rats, or flashback visions of his clan’s murdered elder, there are subtitles. Sudeikis is dead but comes back as a wisecracking narcissistic ghost bound to the monkey, and his running babble got funny once I could relax into it. And the animation has improved. It’s still not that good but at least it’s acceptable now. The best part is that there’s now a ghost assassin named Yuki. It’s a ghostly woman in a flowing white robe dress. When she first materialized, I had to catch myself because my first thought was that it was silly to introduce ghosts into this animated world but then I caught myself, remembering that a sentient macaque who carries a pistol and a katana is enough for all ‘reality’ bets to be off. I hope Yuki comes back into play because she was just in one episode. The way she is actualized isn’t great but it’s far more acceptable. Hope to finish season 1 before Hulu dries up. |
