One Shot (2021) - Drunk Monk - 12-02-2024

A 97 min one-er from the one and only Scott Adkins.

There’s not too much to this plot-wise. Adkins leads a team of Seals to pick up a high value prisoner from a Guantanamo-like center on some desolate island. Then they are attacked by terrorists and they must fight their way out.

It’s like a modern castle siege flick. The number of terrorists is absurd. They just keep coming. The kill count is ridiculous.

Where this excels is at being a one-er. There are some tight edits but for the most part, it’s an incredible fusion of complex fight choreo and steadycam cinematography. The firefight bursts out at around 20 mins and its furious gun play with in camera effects for blood squibs and explosions. About 20 more mins in, Adkins goes on a solo quest to secure coms and there’s a lot of knifing plus a hardcore hand-2-hand fight. It’s very impressive choreo and smartly framed fights, a masterful technical achievement. And the tension  that a one-er can create is well played. Stakes are high. Characters die. And the fights look incredibly real given the nature of the film.

D00M recommended.
