The Great Yokai War: Guardians (2021) - Drunk Monk - 10-21-2024 Another kids film by Miike. It’s a deep dive into Yokai with some great HR Puffnstuff level costumes and some mediocre cgi. Two brothers, descendants of a demon slaying samurai, are enlisted to help the yokai stop a yokaiju - a giant ghostly pillbug with a screaming face - that is rolling towards Tokyo causing earthquakes and threatening to destroy Japan by splitting it in half. The kids were annoying as they can be, but the Yokai were fun. I liked the 9 tailed fox and the Rokurokobi but I’m a sucker for those particular yokai. The tengu was cool. I also liked the random ones like the dude carrying tofu, the bean washer and the bloody mom with her miscarried baby. The bone dragon was weak cgi. There were swordfights but mostly magical. There was this bit about closing one eye to see the Yokai world which made the one-eyed aspect of Gegege no Kitaro make sense. There were a lot of Yokai rules but I didn’t know if those were based on genuine myths or just made up for the movie. The beginning had some Miike moments, hinting at something darker, but nothing retina-scarring. Only D00M recommended if you’re into yokai or Miike Seen on Hoopla |
