SPYxFAMILY - Drunk Monk - 10-10-2024
Tara recommended this to me. It’s an anime about a spy who has to assemble a family for his cover and adopts a telepathic prepubescent daughter and an assassin wife. The spy and assassin don’t know each others secret identities yet but the telepath knows all. The first ep was middling, just introducing the spy (who is a master of disguise) and the daughter (who is the chibi, if you know Japanese culture). But the second ep introduced the assassin and it suddenly got funny. And sanguineous.
Tara said it reminds her of my fav anime Way of the Househusband and I can see the comparison but it’s not at that level of caricature yet. Nevertheless I’ll watch more. Only 2 seasons of 25 & 12 eps respectively.

I’m maybe 5 eps deep now. Yor, the ‘mom’ assassin (don’t know why she’s named that) is my fav character. I’m only watching it for her now.
The ep about rescuing the princess was painfully absurd - so anime it hurt.

I’m seeing why this show is popular. It’s funny in that exaggerated anime way. The last ep was Yor introducing Loid to her brother and the two lines at once delivery of internal thoughts and external statements was complex and hard to follow but it worked well as comedy. Funny.

Part 2 of Yor’s brother intro and the forced kiss, which got kinky yet funny.
Then the dodgeball tournament which was just the daughter and hysterical - so exaggeratedly anime that it was super funny. lol-Ed for realz at Yor teaching her ninja throwing techniques in prep for the dodgeball (which in Japanese is like ‘do-je-baru’). This is one of my fav eps so far.

An aquarium trip to maintain the illusion of being a family and mission for Loid. He goes undercover in the penguin exhibit to track down a file.
This ep had a different tone - a narrator explaining what the backstory was seemed superfluous this many eps in, but here we are. This could be a drop in invite to get more nooBs midseason. I enjoyed it for the candy that it is.
Yor kicks a guy into the ceiling. She’s a super funny character.

The dog acquisition has crossed e13& 14 which seems to have gone into a prolonged story arc about an assassination plot involving super dogs. But there’s one that sees the future and goes ‘ Orr’ like the Swedish chef muppet that’s destined to be the family dog (beyond the dog’s visions, the opening credits give it away - those credits changed significantly which also leads me to believe that this is a new season, just bunched together for US marketing).
Best scene in e13 was Yor kicking one of the dog wielding terrorists so hard that he bounced like a pinball down the alley.

E15 concludes the dog acquisition arc and it was very sweet. The dog is named ‘Bond’ and I look forward to its contribution for the next mission.

Tara asked if I got to the underground tennis arc yet. I had not until tonight. It was over the top. The tennis match is set up like a no holds barred underground fight but competitors can dope up or cheat however they like. Loid is partnered with a psycho spy Nightfall who has an obsessive crush on them and seems to replace Yor as his fake wife. Super funny all around. Again Yor has the best scene where she ends up in a grudge match with Nightfall and is first to serve. She musters her assassin powers but the tennis ball falls to the ground like she missed it. Then it crumbles into tiny cubes like how bamboo splits after a samurai cuts it.

S2 has been mostly this long arc about the family being on a cruise ship. Anya won a contest so she and Loid can go (3rd class) and Yor is there for her work, allegedly to network with some clients but that’s just the cover. She’s a bodyguard for an important mother and child who is going to defect (the whole reason Loid is a spy is that there’s a major war happening between two fantasy countries.) consequently there’s a gang of assassins on board trying to kill them.
Tonight’s ep (and I’ve lost count of where I am exactly) had Yor battling an assassin with a cyberpunk Kusarigama. It’s one of the longest fight scenes so far - quite satisfying.
I bought Tara a Yor pin at the Japanese market. It was an impulse buy because the store just opened an anime isle with all sorts of SxF merch, plus a lot of Chainsaw man and Attack on Titan, plus more. Yor is the fav character for both of us.

S2 e33 was a bloodbath. I was kinda shocked. This has been a cute goofy family anime but in this ep, Yor has a showdown against a mob of assassins and it’s ridiculously sanguineous. A lot of caricature assassins - the master of chakras, the wire woman, the final ronin - and they meet with some gruesome ends. Yor emerges covered in blood. It literally rains blood. This was a great episode. Possibly my favorite.
E34 wrapped up the assassin party as Yor has an epiphany while looking at a katana blade pointed at her prone body after losing to the ronin. Then she takes charge again and more blood is spilled, but only for a short period, not for the whole ep like the previous.

And we’re done. Or done with the 37 eps available on Hulu. There’s probably more on crunchyroll but I’m not willing to confess to being that much of an anime addict yet.
The long cruise ship Lorelei arc ended happily with the Forgers finally enjoying some sweet family time. Then the penultimate ep explored Becky’s (Anya’s super rich school friend) crush on Loid, which got funny when Yor came into play. Then the final ep was about Bond, the dog that sees the future.
It’s such a quirky anime but it works. It hinges on all the inner dialogs of the characters and Anya’s ability to read their minds. For me, it’s all about Yor.
Not D00M recommended tho - despite my enjoyment of this series, I don’t think any of you will appreciate it.
