The Greatest Night in Pop - Drunk Monk - 02-12-2024
This is a doc about the making of We Are the World, which I’m sure we all remember because it was our gen. It’s fascinating to see the musicians interact, to remember who they were back then and wonder what became of some of them. Also the creation of the song was an amazing process. We were particularly amused by Stevie Wonder coaching Dylan for his part.
The weird thing for me is it’s directed by Bao Nguyen, I interviewed for my very first Den of Geek feature about his Bruce Lee doc Be Water. The music is by Goh Nakamura, who stars as his fictional self in the films by Dave Boyle, who I just interviewed for my most recent Den piece on House of Ninjas, coming out this week. Not exactly sure what Goh contributed to musically because this doc is all about the one song, but it did trip me out a bit.
But back on topic, it’s an amusing and nostalgic music doc. D00M recommended.

I enjoyed it, although I found Lionel Richie's and Kenny Loggins' new faces a bit disturbing.

Ritchie always had an odd face - like his mouth was too big - which is ok for a singer (think Carly Simon).
I didn't even recognize Loggins.

I recognized Rogers although they didn’t have any updated stuff from him. It’s an odd group they interview - Huey Lewis, Cindi Lauper, Sheila E, the boss..

I think Lionel Richie had a bunch of fillers injected in his cheeks. It gives him a slight early man look.
And no, did not mean Rogers. Kenny Loggins was in there a lot actually - he suggested that Huey Lewis sing that solo.

Loggins just didn't look at all like I remembered him (like the 80s footage).
WTH was Ackroyd doing there anyway?
I didn't realize chicken & waffles went back that far. I have often said that I'm perplexed by chicken and waffles because they don't go together in my head and they arose after I stopped eating chicken. But I guess I just missed the boat on that.

Stevie coaching Dylan was my favorite part. Stevie did a fair impersonation of Dylan. I mean, anyone can do a Dylan because his style is so distinct and easy to caricature, but Stevie seemed to nail his essential sound. I regret never seeing Stevie live.

I am of two minds on this. It was great hearing some of the stories. But it was a bit tedious since we all knew the song was going to get made. Not a lot of drama. And it just felt like most of it was Lionel Richie humble bragging the whole movie. Dylan did look lost. Glad to see Huey Lewis especially after all his hearing struggles of late. Surprised they got Springsteen to sit down and be a talking head. I agree with KB about Kenny Loggins. I think Richie just looked swollen in the face.
