The Burial (2023) - Greg - 10-16-2023
Tommy Lee Jones plays Jerry O'Keefe a funeral director in Mississippi who is almost forced out of business by a huge Death Industry conglomerate from Canada. Jerry signed a contract with the Canadian company and they reneged on the deal. It is implied the Canadian Company hoped Jerry would have to declare bankruptcy and they would just be able to buy him out. O'Keefe hires a high-flying personal injury lawyer Willie E. Gary, played by Jamie Foxx, to defend him in the upcoming lawsuit.
If you know even the barest minimum of the law and how trials work you will be completely confused by this movie. At many points during the trial, because of course there is a trial, you have to wonder how certain things are even evidence in the trial. The Canadian does a lot of shady things but none of them impact the deal they had with O'Keefe. It was all very confusing.
Jamie Foxx got to play fast talking Jamie Foxx. Jones got to look old. Even worse, Alan Ruck of Ferris Bueller fame, looks even older than Jones.
And not a single sword fight.

Tommy Lee Jones is still very good at playing Tommy Lee Jones...
It felt very formulaic, and the monologue in the post-middle point in the film about unmarked slave cemeteries was so heavy handed. There were some funny bits, but I think they were all in the trailer.

Another question: why was the $ awarded to Mr. O'Keefe so enormous (5x what was asked) if the affected parties were truly the impoverished in the Biloxi, Mississippi area?
Shouldn't they have received reparations?
