Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - Drunk Monk - 10-13-2023 @ Frost Fruit Bats opener. It’s less than half full, but a pleasant evening. Shoulda brought earplugs for Stacy. You’d think I’d remember after all these years but I keep them in my RM jacket which I’m not wearing now. RE: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - Drunk Monk - 10-14-2023 We got earplugs at medical. Who’d a thunk? JRAD lives up to its name - almost dead. They’ve got the jams down. Joe is a remarkable drummer. Their bass and keys are solid too - keys uses a grand and a Hammond proficiently. The jams are tricky, lots of red herrings, lots of homages to rock classics. Hairpin musical turns. Their vocalist does a spot on Bobby. The only thing lacking is that transcendent soulfulness - they can’t handle the power ballads. It’s the strongest at capturing that dead sound - almost dead - arguably better than Dead & Co but I had many issues with Meyer until the very end. Very enjoyable overall. We both will go again next time JRAD passes thru. 2nd that emotion > Minglewood > let it grow > cats under stars > here comes sunshine > fruit bats lead singer (country Van Morrison) such a buzzkill Lost sailor Foolish heart > eyes > music never stopped > morning dew Another fruit bats lead song to close so we left as soon as it started - we could hear it on our walk back to the car and were pleased that we left when we did RE: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - thatguy - 10-14-2023 (10-14-2023, 12:05 AM)Drunk Monk Wrote: JRAD lives up to its name - almost dead. RE: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - Drunk Monk - 10-18-2023 Dead tribute bands are my methadone RE: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2025 JRAD @ Fox Queen Jane Reuben & Cheri’s Eyes ? Pit call After midnight Black throatrd wind > Jack straw Althea Break Beat it on down the line Shakedown > greatest story > space > mission in the rain > deal patient Let it grow K RE: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead - Drunk Monk - 10-28-2025 Finally get back to this as a break from a writing binge. I've got a lot of writing deadlines over the next few weeks. I had not been to the Fox since 2017 for Neil Young. It's changed, under new RM management. There's reserved parking at a nearby lot, which is great, but it required the annoying ParkMobile app, which I had downloaded beforehand as instructedbut it took me forever to get the discount code to work, after a nearly 2 hour drive to make it up through the Friday commute. Waa, waa, waa. But once I got there, the deadhead tribe had me grining that mischevious grin. So many friends, some I had not touched base with in some time. I was partnered with a young nooB gal, Michelle. She needed more radio practice, wanted to carry the jump bag too, and was easily entertained by my long strange trip stories. Another deer in the headlights of deadhead DM. There were three teams - the three stations were front of house stage right or left, and up in the balcony. Each provided an excellent view. Joe Russo is a demi-god. The previous show he went all jazzy, which confirmed what I had heard said about his take on the Dead. This time, he went for the crescendos. Crescendo jams. The D00MDeadHeads understand. JRAD has the same line-up as GD, lead, rhythm, bass guitar, keys, and Russo on the drums. That's right, Joe covers both Mickey and Billy (now Jay) and does it with such bombastic style that I was completely transfixed. Dem Mi God Our first call was a syncopal in the pit. While the show was going on. They were teasing Eyes but I haven't looked up if they went there. The call was deep in the pit where it was super thick with writhing deadheads like some giant pulsing amoeba of hippies. But I know deadheads will make way for Rock Med so I dove in with glee. Michelle was so wide eyed but followed in my wake (she had the radio and jump pack and a very standard RM shirt). I found our patient and with the help of his friends, we extricated him for air. After Midnight was the soundtrack and it was perfect. When asked why I do RM - it's for moments like that - getting to be the hero with a kick ass soundtrack blaring. Mostly we just watched the show and chatted up old friends. We had another syncopal, an older feisty dude, being psychically punished by his watchful wife for dropping out. We were in one of the cooler halls for that, an exit alley, which was mellow. The last patient was K. He had the signature chalky snot on his top lip, a telltale sign of K. I talked to him but he was gamey. He had nothing according to the others, only one shoe, but he later showed a wallet. K is a quick trip, so we could've gotten him back if he had timed his dose properly but the show was over so we rolled him. When the ambulance pulled up, he jumped up and bolted. We only have jurisdiction in the house. This was an Oakland ambulance who have plenty of better things to do than chase some crazy dude across downtown. I wonder how far he got. Downtown Oakland is still intense - you must keep your guard up. It was another great night. I'm totally sold on Russo now. I met one of my former Den of Geek editors there. He was out from NY and we sighted each other as deadheads several years ago but now neither of us remember how that happened. We've been talking about crossing paths at a show for years. He'll text me when he's at shows and forward vids. I reciprocate but not so much with JRAD. I've told him about my first show, which I enjoyed but not religiously. Now I recognize Russo's demi-god status. He could see the bliss in my eyes and said 'This is the show I've been telling you about.' Ja. I get it now. Gotta see Russo whenever he's in striking range in hopes of getting another show like that. Maybe music is just hitting me harder lately. Alice > Ziggy > Outernational > Lorde > Joe. I've had quite a run over the last two weeks. My mind is blown. My next show is Halloween. |
