Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms - Drunk Monk - 09-13-2023

Might have to go to the theater for this one...

RE: Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms - Drunk Monk - 09-26-2023

I am so glad I saw this on the big screen. It was awesome at that size, if just for the credits alone.

Plucked from Investature of the Gods, a 16th century epic, it's something I've never read but seen so many films based on it that I reallly should. Maybe I'll stick that in the queue after Titanium Scorpions...

It begins with an epic siege. It's massive, a lot of cgi, and a lot of mobs. It's a big opening, on the level of the finale for most films like this. And it marches on from there. It's the Shang, so ornate geometric designs and heavy bronze. Exquisite costumes and armor, impressive sets for what wasn't cgi, some crazy cinematographic angles, and a twisty overblown plot. And did I mention demons? One of my favorite demons. Demoness. Narana Erdyneeva nails the 9 tailed fox. So seductively feral. There's also Daoist magic, dragons, more demons, taotie, Nezha, Yang Jian... And there's sword fights. And lots of sacrificial suicide.

Actually, there's a lot of film here. It's 2 1/2 hours long, and a ride all the way through. I was throughly entertained by its spectacle. Even the credits were amusing because it was like looking at the great wall of china where every brick is a name. Most ridiculous credits ever. And just when you think they're done, there's an awesome post-credit scene that teases the upcoming sequel, then even more credits - wasn't even halfway through.

It was grand to see it with cf. I was running late due to the ridiculously annoying trip to the doc's for my mom, and the cfs shared their homemade chili with veggies from their garden - so delicious. Right when we sat down, the movie started. cf was one of the only white attendees - there was a quartet of hipsters seated in front of us. And we had to dodge robocop when getting back to my car.

Totally D00M recommended, especially for the big screen.

I now totally understand Chinese god mythos.  Go on. Ask me anything.

Except about the three-eyed dude in the after-credits teaser (that got a laugh out me, because I'm notoriously bad at telling jokes, and am particularly famous for mistelling the joke about how many ears Spock has, the correct punchline being, Three, a left ear, a right ear, and a final frontier, only my version is, Three, a left ear, a right ear, and another ear in the center of the forehead.  There's gotta be a similar joke about the three-eyed guy that I can mess up.

I tried to explain the movie to LCF when I got home. But after describing the flying ape I'd start talking tornados and a dog and about a house landing on a witch, and obviously I'd drifted into the wrong movie. But what about that flying ape?  I kinda lost it when that cropped up. Other than that, everything made perfect sense.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'm never going to understand the half of this.  But it was a glorious mess of sensory overload.  And those credits. Those credits were like a second feature that threatened to outclass the movie itself.

But such a movie could never be outclassed.

LCF asked when the next in the series would be out. I said when the director had fully recovered from making this one.

The credits alone demand to be seen on the big screen.

CotG is aspiring to be a trilogy that Wuershan hopes to direct for a decade. The budget was $445 m and it employed over 2k workers. It originally targeted a 2020 premiere but the world got sick. Part 2 depends upon the box office success of part 1. Wuershan has said he hopes to expand this beyond the trilogy for the next 30 years, using thr MCU approach to cover the various individual heroes and gods.

I’m all in. I hope I’ll live that long to see this through (assuming it doesn’t flop, of course).

On an impulse I snuck out to catch this in downtown svale. First time at that theater. It’s nice. Easy parking. Goofy development - not the quaint mall it was before. I didn’t know they had an IMAX or I might’ve splurged.

The film would be like jumping in at endgame, or deathly hallows 2 - there’s a lot to catch up on. Every character is announced in that classic Chinese film manner, but if you don’t know who Nezha is, he just buzzes in and out through battles. And there are a lot of battles, starting with an ambush and escalating to a full blown city siege with flying magic eye discs that emit knock out rays to anyone who didn’t drunk the koolaid (actually it looked more like watered down soy milk). There’s battlefield warfare with giants, flying demons, a qilin, sorcerers, and some demigods.

Nashi reprises her role as General Deng and this installment is all about her. I need to rewatch the first one to remember. She stole this one - so fierce. Funny thing is is don’t remember her from part 1. I should’ve watched that again as prep.

Some of the cgi is cheesey like always. And some is cool. The three torsoed blue-glowing demon Yin Jiao was visual. And the legion of snake and bug zombies are intense but that’s just prep for the third and final installment of this trilogy. The tossing cgi horses away is wacky.

This is the first movie I’ve seen that ended with the supertitle - please stay for the three end credit scenes. And squeezed in between those scenes were a ton of credits, each to a melodramatic pop song. But they were good teases.

I watched CotG:KoS1 again and it made a heckuva lot more sense. On the small screen, the sheer spectacle is not as overwhelming, plus I know where it’s going to go, more or less, so I could follow the characters better. The hostage sons are the trickiest because they all look similar and wear the same armor, but I followed them better this time.

And General Deng only appears in the second end-of-credits scene for a few seconds so I don’t feel bad about not remembering her in part 2. That 2nd trailer is dense because it teases the four giant guardians and the general with a third eye, so Deng is totally overshadowed.

Part 1 is now available on YT with ads https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AgXG1KixcHM&pp=sAQB

This remains totally D00M recommended.
