Nimona (2023) - Greg - 07-02-2023

An animated feature about a young girl and an older knight in a very futuristic society. The young girl, Nimona, wants to be the sidekick to disgraced knight Ballister, played by Riz Ahmed. Everyone lives in a walled city protected by hereditary guards. The walls are there to keep out the monsters. There is a lot going on. A lot of tropes and standard stories, but it is put together in an interesting way. There is a strong LGBTQ+ component to the story as well.

I laughed quite a few times.

I really enjoyed this too. Chloe killed it as Nimona but to be fair, I’ve been crushing on her since The Peripheral.

Riz was good too. A fine role for him.

I found the animation style solid, particularly how the faceted armor worked. And I liked the futuristic knights-in-armor world.

I did spot the villain as soon as the villain appeared - that was just too obvs. I also saw where the backstory flashback was going too although I didn’t quite see that it would play out so. It had its predictable points, but enough fresh ideas to keep it moving along.

I’m torn about the voice actor Eugene in the same way I was torn about Takei coming out.

Luved the messages in the end. And sword fights!

D00M recommended.

I thought it was very good. Nimona is supposed to be a Trans allegory and it really works well. The other tropes were also well-handled. The creator of the graphic novel that the movie is based on was a coproducer and did a couple of voices.
