The Quiet Man (1959) - Greg - 03-19-2023 John Wayne plays Sean Thornton back from America to reclaim his birth cottage and live a peaceful life. The locals are at first distrustful of the Yank until they learn he grew up in the village of Innisfree. On the way in to Innisfree, Thornton spots Kate Danaher, played by Maureen O'Hara. Sparks fly. The only problem is Kate is sister to Squire Red Will Danaher and Thornton has just bought the cottage Squire Danaher has been trying to buy for years. Instant enemies and because of the customs of Ireland Thornton can't meet with Kate without the permission of her brother. It's all a mess. Yep, I watch this film a lot.I see new things in it every time. This time I paid more attention to the local IRA men and John Ford's brother who plays an old man in the movie. The old man pops up all the time as if Ford saw him hanging around the set and put him in a particular scene to give hime something to do. Ward Bond plays the fishing crazy catholic priest. There is an also a protestant vicar in there as well. The whole film ends with a great scene that involves a five mile walk and a fight scene all across town. The town of Innisfree is played by Cong. We'll be traveling there again in May to take The Quiet Man Walking Tour. We'll also be heading over the pivotal train station as well as visiting a particularly scenic bridge. Rewatching the movie gave us a sense of things to look for. Even without that, the film is still very enjoyable. |
