Breathless (1960) - Drunk Monk - 09-14-2022

I confess that I'm not in the loop when it comes to Jean-Luc Godard. I know the name and the reputation, but I don't know any of his films, or at least, I've forgotten them. I used to reject French film. I still do a little. Since news of his passing came yesterday, I watched this.

In all fairness, I haven't finished it completely. I fell asleep somewhere in the middle. Not sure where. Wasn't due to the film. It was the Rx hitting after a long day. Maybe I'll finish it later. But I got the idea.

I can imagine how revolutionary in its day. Godard moves his camera brilliantly, especially considering this was long before th steadycam. His framing is stark. His storytelling must have been bold in 1960.

I should really finish this. It's considered one of the greatest films ever on many prestigious lists. I was enjoying it but sometimes that nortrip hits me like a hammer.

Fin

It was absurdly French. I can see where it broke the mold and how so much cinema followed. Some great camera work - nice one-ers. Breaking that 4th wall. But now it feels dated. Didn’t move me in the end. But I respect what it must’ve been when it came out.

I saw Breathless back in the day in Film School. The class showcased a lot of French New Wave films, but I didn't quite get the appeal.

That being said, I caught part of Day for Night by Truffaut on TCM and I want to see more of that. Nothing better than deconstructing the film making process with a film.

Me neither. Michel is such an asshole. A French asshole. Un connard...

I was just waiting for him to die.
