Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka - Drunk Monk - 08-02-2022

This is the book that Bullet Train is based upon. I borrowed it from Hoopla and speed read it for an article that I’m working on. I know, I know, speed read books shouldn’t be included in actual books reviewed here but I post so few of the books I read because most are for work. And I generally speed read those too.

The books starts out the same as the movie and then veers wildly off course.

I liked its style. Each chapter is titled under one of the characters and furthers his story arc. These all intertwine until the end. Each chapter also includes a diagram of the train with the cars where the action is happening is highlighted.

Isaka bases most of his narrative on dialog. I’ve always felt that was a bit of a cheat but it works and makes for an easy read. He doesn’t have a grand descriptive style but much of that might have been lost in translation.

I liked the movie better.
