That happens in a few minutes - just preppin my notes... (05-31-2022, 10:45 AM)Greg Wrote: BULLET TRAIN! The interview went well only later than scheduled. The previous interview cut into my half hour by like 8 mins or so, which was a bit of a bummer as it went well. When it comes to fight choreo, Leitch is the man. I'm a tad tentative of this film because it's already getting called out for whitewashing. And that's a fair call at this point. I brought up both Sanada and Koji who appear in this film in an attempt to stave that off a bit, but I fear they will be supporting characters only. I have not seen a screener. Hopefully my local promoter will offer something. This doesn't come out until August 5 so it'll be a while... RE: Bullet Train - Drunk Monk - 06-07-2022 After interviewing Leitch, I'm really looking forward to this. RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 06-07-2022 I think this is the movie I'm looking forward to the most at the moment. Well, this and Top Gun:Maverick. RE: Bullet Train - Drunk Monk - 08-01-2022 Seen! One of the D00Miest films I’ve seen in a while. It’s Guy Ritchie and Tarantino’s bastard child with a better eye for fight choreo. The fights are mostly one shot, one cut, or strike or whatev, but there’s good flow to it and it’s cleverly done. And yes - sword fights - ending in a very satisfying climactic sword duel. It’s Silver Streak meets Battle Royale, so absurdly unapologetic, full of snarky quips, with a manga sensibility. Loud and colorful, and oddly karmic. Fast paced, funny, and oh so ultra violent. It opens with swords through the throat and gets more brutal as it picks up the pace. There’s even a densely interwoven plot that I’d have to watch again to unravel completely but it doesn’t slow down the action in any way. Pitt kills it, as does Koji & Sanada. The whole cast delivers - even a surprise cameo which I won’t spoil because it’s too funny. Seen in imax, not that it’s the sort of film that needs imax - that was just bonus for this press and friends only screener - 200 seat house and there was maybe 40 of us at best. RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-02-2022 I'm hoping it arrives at my local this weekend. There is a planned power outage at the house and going to see Bullet Train is how I will pass the time. Definitely not IMAX. RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-04-2022 Who would possibly describe Jackie Chan as underrated? Oh, Brad Pitt. Quote:“We always talk about Jackie Chan, how much we love Jackie Chan,” said Pitt. “He’s like our Charlie Chaplin, he’s just so underrated. And it’s so amazing the stuff that he’s pulled off. So to do something in that vein, with the comedy infused into the fights, I’ve never done that before!” RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-05-2022 I have happiness in my life. The local theater is screening Bullet train. I did not see any notice of BT on their site all week and feared the worst. RE: Bullet Train - Drunk Monk - 08-05-2022 I think Jackie is underrated in Hollywood. He’s written off as the funny Kung Fu stunt guy but he’s so much more. Den of Geek panned BT as a bloated Tarantino rip off. I’ve seen a few other negative reviews. Nevertheless I stand by my endorsement. It has swords. I like swords. RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-05-2022 I've seen a lot of negative reviews, too. Still going. I will accept the Queen's scorn afterwards. RE: Bullet Train - Drunk Monk - 08-05-2022 Good plan RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-07-2022 Plot holes. Characters that disappear. Scenes that never end, Ultra-Vi. No wonder why DM loved this. Actually it wasn't that bad. It took a long time to get going. It felt like a three hour film which was weird for action film. A lot of time I just wish they got on with it rather than spending so much time talking. Part of the problem was the trailers gave away all the best scenes. But granted, they didn't give away the story. And there is a lot of story in there. I think it needed to be developed better. I think the biggest weakness of the film was Brad Pitt's character. He did a great job with it but it never really went anywhere. And who is the hero of this film? It wasn't Pitt. Was it Lemon? Good to see Michael Shannon in the Michael Shannon role. There were a lot of enjoyable moments in the film. I especially liked one cameo character who had two funny scenes. There was another character from an NBC super-hero show that they introduced but never really paid off. Which was weird because so much of the film is setting up things to pay off later. Same with the cameo character. I think I have the plot pretty clear, and there was a lot of plot, but I think I will watch this again. Again high expectations before going in led to being less than overwhelmed by the movie. Of course it's Doom recommended. RE: Bullet Train - Drunk Monk - 08-07-2022 Den went with my whitewashing article https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/is-bullet-train-guilty-of-whitewashing/ Let the comments speak for themselves RE: Bullet Train - Greg - 08-07-2022 Concur. RE: Bullet Train - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 08-08-2022 Enjoyed it. Bring on your plot “holes” — I call them “nuance opportunities” and know that they are lost on *some* people. I concur with DM’s review all the way down the line. That is one DOOMie flick, man, despite Captain No-Fun’s admonishments. |
