Intimacy (2001) [British] by Patrice Chereau - cranefly - 03-25-2022 Every Wednesday, Jay, a bartender who's divorced and living alone, gets a visit from Claire, who's married. Their talk is minimal. They don't even know each other's name. But they have sex. This has been going on for a long while. But then Jay gets curious and starts following her after she leaves, and in this way he learns of her married life and even (on the sly) meets with her husband. Jay begins to realize that he loves Claire, and eventually clashes ensue. The movie is notable on a couple of fronts. First, there's the unsimulated sex. In real life the actress is married, and her real-life husband had to come to terms with her role. The soundtrack is notable for including contributions from Bowie, The Clash, Tindersticks, Clinic, Dream City Film Club, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, and Eyeless In Gaza. (I won't pretend to know who all of those are, but recognize several notables.) The cast is British, and throughout they are speaking with a totally unsimulated British accent. Subtitles would have helped, but there were none (I turn that option ON [under settings] every time I go into Kanopy -- why don't they allow that to be set as the default!). Anyway, the movie just doesn't have any. So I only understood maybe 70-75 percent of what was said. Not really recommended, unless you enjoy unsimulated ear strain. |
