Sisters with Transistors (2020) - thatguy - 02-06-2022 This is currently available on Showtime. Laurie Anderson narrates a survey of the unsung women pioneers of electronic music. So many... I knew Delia Derbyshire (Dr. Who), and the couple that did the Forbidden Planet soundtrack. Many more I did not know. I was wondering if they would cover Walter/Wendy Carlos. As a "women's study", I wasn't sure where they'd fall on a trans person, but Carlos got her moment near the end. It was funny that they referred to Carlos as her, but included an older clip of Carlos sporting sideburns and explaining how the synthesizer works. I was surprised that some of the other artists they had interviewed weren't happy with Switched on Bach: while it was very popular, it ruined the "new directions" music was taking a little as the public saw synthesizers as just a new way to do old (dead white guy) music. In the end, I felt that this survey didn't have enough depth. I would really have liked to hear more pieces from each artist, and more about their particular process and contributions. Many were listed In Memoriam at the end. It would have been nice to hear more about each of their lives. --tv |
